Flight Path Optimisation Software Engineer – Qantas (Mascot, Sydney) Drive innovation in aviation by optimising flight paths for over 5,000 weekly flights using cutting‑edge algorithms and cloud‑based systems. Help reduce environmental impact while enhancing operational performance, collaborating with experts and deploying solutions that keep Qantas at the forefront of flight planning. Responsibilities Develop and improve cutting‑edge algorithms for flight path optimisation. Add new functionality and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of flight planning algorithms. Interact with subject‑matter experts to design and implement new features for the Flight Path Optimisation Engine. Develop features and algorithms primarily in C++ within a complex project. Deploy and support the engine in its cloud‑based environment. Maintain the highest coding standards and comprehensive documentation. Identify innovative ways to contribute to ongoing fuel savings within the flight‑planning domain. Provide ongoing production and development support, including participation in an on‑call roster. Build and maintain cloud-based systems that ensure safe, efficient flight operations each week. Qualifications Tertiary qualification in Aeronautical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Software Engineering or a related degree. Strong software engineering skills with proficiency in C++ (or a comparable language). Experience with the Linux command‑line environment. Proficiency using Docker and Docker development environments. Familiarity with cloud computing platforms such as AWS or Azure. Understanding of optimisation techniques and path‑search algorithms. Experience in software development or programming with Java, C++ and SQL. Basic knowledge of Linux (Bash). Basic knowledge of airline operations and navigation. Strong communication skills to explain complex algorithms to engineers and non‑engineers alike. Creative problem‑solving ability and a proactive, “can‑do” attitude. Highly self‑motivated, eager to research, learn and develop skills and experience. Enthusiasm for aviation and technology with an inquisitive mindset.
