About The Roles This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic team in a challenging but rewarding role as a Senior Youth Justice Officer (SYJO) in either Youth CLMI Services or Youth Court Services. Youth CLMI Services The SYJO is responsible for case management of young people on Orders under the Criminal Law (Mental Impairment) Act 2023 (CLMI). The position is responsible for coordinating, consulting and supporting CLMI identified young people within community, custody and Court settings. In addition, the position represents the department in court, responsible for the provision and submission of court reports, sourcing responsible adults to arrange bail, and secretariat functions for interagency collaboration and system coordination. The SYJO - Youth CLMI is responsible for providing services for young people that are in alignment with those mandated under the CLMI Act 2023. Youth Court Services SYJOs working in Youth Justice Court Services represent (on a rostered basis) the Department of Corrective Services in the Perth Children’s Court and other children’s courts as required to present options consistent with the general principles of The Young Offenders Act. The Role Includes liaison with Police Prosecutors, Director Public Prosecutions (DPP) and defence or duty counsel on matters relating to young people held in custody and young people who may need special consideration due to their development, cultural issues and maturation. pre-court liaison and support service to young people and their families who appear in Children’s Courts post-court explanation of responsibilities and information in relation to orders that young people have been placed on by the court monitoring standards and quality of advice reports to the children’s court The SYJO also provides advice, training, coaching and mentoring to Youth Justice staff as well as training YJS centre statutory staff on Children’s Court preparation, procedures and representation.
