The organisation

The National Sporting Organisation (NSO) is the governing body responsible for providing Australians with the opportunity to play the sport from junior levels through to elite competition, including the Olympic Games.  Their ambition is to increase the opportunities for everyone in Australia to enjoy the game anywhere, anytime.

The role

A key member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), the position is responsible for providing vision, leadership and effective management of all financial, risk and administrative elements of the business and:

  • Oversee and monitor all financial and business planning activities including:
    • Leading and evolving a shared services team to support financial operations across the network
    • Leading the implementation of the annual budgeting process in conjunction with the Executive Leadership Team (ELT)
    • Monitor financial reporting including preparation of monthly management accounts, reforecasts, annual financial statements and balance sheet and cashflow reporting
    • Lead the annual external audit process and relationship, including testing the market every 3 year
    • Oversight of payroll and on-costs and other statutory payments such as GST, PAYG and FBT returns in Australia and overseas (where relevant)
    • Ensuring a solid framework of financial controls, segregation of duties and appropriate financial delegations are in place and adhered to
    • Oversee external reporting requirements including the Acquittal of all funding requirements (primarily Sport Australia (SA) and other government partnerships)
  • Management of all key external stakeholders associated with these responsibilities, including bankers, auditors, investment bankers, consultants and insurance brokers
  • Review & provide input on all business-related contracts and agreements
  • Acting as the primary ELT support for the Finance, Audit & Risk Management (FARM) Committee

  • Is committed to reading and understanding the Strategic Plan to ensure that efforts are focused on getting the best outcome
  • A thorough knowledge of best practice and trends in finance, HR, information technology, governance and risk within the sporting context
  • Ability to communicate with other NSOs to gain knowledge of best practice in the industry

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in commerce, business or accounting
  • CA or CPA qualification
  • 10+ years’ experience in senior finance or sport administration roles in a small to medium business environment
  • An interest in sport as a participant, volunteer, official or other capacity
  • GAICD membership viewed favourably
