The English Language and Foundation Studies Centre (ELFSC) offers the University’s enabling programs for domestic students, including: Newstep for recent school leavers aged 18-20; Yapug for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students; and Open Foundation (including Open Foundation Online) for students aged 20 and above.ELFSC enrols approximately 3,000 students in its enabling programs each year and is the largest enabling provider of enabling education in Australia. Courses are designed to prepare students for a range of undergraduate discipline areas. Almost 20% of the undergraduate student intake at the University of Newcastle commenced their studies in one of the University’s enabling programs.The position of Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer (Enabling Teaching and Learning) in the English Language and Foundation Studies Centre is now available.The role will contribute to the quality outcomes of enabling education at the University of Newcastle. The role will be primarily responsible for ensuring the high quality of teaching and learning, for overseeing academic coordination, curriculum development, and related scholarship in the disciplines taught by the Centre, and provide support for the Director of the Centre. The successful candidate will encourage a positive collaborative culture within the staff of the Centre and forge strong links between the Centre and the wider University community.The Centre is therefore seeking an enthusiastic and talented leader with a strong record of teaching excellence and a commitment to access, equity and inclusion that is reflected in all phases of the creation, delivery and assessment of courses, administration and in research. The position will help to build the profile of the Centre through their individual and collaborative research efforts in both publications and grant applications. The successful candidate will be expected to take on leadership and administrative tasks commensurate with the Level C or D academic descriptors.SalaryThere will be an allowance paid for the role of Deputy DirectorCompulsory contributory superannuation is a condition of employment plus generous employer contributionRequired SkillsAll applicants must be PhD qualified (discipline not specific) and to be successful in this role, you will possess:
  • high level leadership experience and skills especially in Teaching and Learning;
  • Exceptional Interpersonal & communication skills, and ability to enthuse and inspire staff;
  • A track record of quality Research outputs and the ability to attract grants, especially for Teaching and Learning projects;
  • Experience in leading and cultivating workplace practices and behaviours that promote, support and maintain a safe, healthy, equitable, diverse and respectful workplace;
  • The ability to work under pressure and produce outcomes;
  • Experience working with people who have had challenges in their education journeythe capacity for decision making and balancing complex and ambiguous considerations; anda current Drivers Licence.
