Head of Fitness and Conditioning

The Adelaide Football Club is seeking an experienced and dedicated Head of Fitness and Conditioning to join our high-performance team. This pivotal role is responsible for the delivery and implementation of top-tier fitness, conditioning and rehabilitation programs to ensure players develop and maintain fitness and conditioning to effectively execute game plans. You will design, deliver and maintain best practice fitness, conditioning and return-to-play programs that drive and adhere to the elite standards of physical performance required to excel in AFL football.
This position offers the opportunity to work closely with elite athletes and contribute significantly to their performance and well-being.
About the Role:
This is a full-time permanent position with some out-of-normal office hours work, including match days. The key responsibilities include:
- Assist the General Manager of High Performance in planning and managing seasonal training loads.
- Collaborate with coaching staff to balance skills and conditioning sessions.
- Lead the design and implementation of rehabilitation programs to rebuild strength, power, speed, and agility after injuries.
- Support the physical preparation of players for the AFL season.
- Develop individual football and conditioning programs to assist players with their return to play.
- Implement testing procedures during pre-season and in-season periods.
- Coordinate individual and team conditioning programs during off-season, pre-season, and in-season.
- Monitor player progress in collaboration with the High-Performance team.
- Provide game day assistance as required.
- Address player health, including mental health and well-being.
- Conduct team and individual warm-ups, recovery, and running mechanics sessions.
The candidate:
To be selected for our team, you will have:
- Tertiary qualification in Human Movement, Exercise or Sports Science, or equivalent.
- Qualified Strength and Conditioning Coach (ASCA or equivalent).
- At least 7 years’ experience working with elite professional athletes in an interdisciplinary team.
- Advanced understanding of fitness, conditioning, and rehabilitation principles with at least 7 years’ experience as a Strength and/or Conditioning Coach.
- Expertise in using appropriate programming software and fitness assessment technology and proficiency in data analysis and visualisation.
- Proven track record in developing and implementing conditioning programs in a professional team sport.
- Understanding of medical, nutrition, rehabilitation, sports psychology, and skill acquisition fundamentals.
- ASCA (Level 2) and/or ESSA Accreditation.
- Experience working with athletes across various sports.
- Expertise in acceleration and running mechanics.
