Head of Sports Science

We are seeking an innovative and dedicated Head of Sports Science to join our high-performance team. Reporting to the Head of Fitness and Conditioning, this pivotal role is responsible for providing current best practice sports science services to optimise training, enhance match performance.

About the Role:

This is position will have some out-of-normal office hours work, including match days.

The key responsibilities include:

• Capture, analyse, and manage training and performance data (GPS, RPE, HR, etc.).
• Quantify training loads and monitor changes in screening and testing data.
• Provide physiological and performance feedback to medical, performance, and coaching staff.
• Conduct routine physiological field and lab testing, and monitor players’ sleep, recovery, and wellness.
• Implement best practice recovery science and develop novel fatigue monitoring techniques.
• Maintain sports science equipment and facilities, and ensu consistent sports science delivery across AFL, AFLW, and SANFL programs.
• Perform match day GPS duties and interpret real-time GPS data.
• Supervise Sports Science staff across AFL, AFLW and SANFL programs including interns, fostering a cohesive team environment.

We are looking for someone with:

• Tertiary qualifications in Sports Science or a related field.
• Accreditation with a relevant Sports Science Body (e.g., AESS, ASCA, UKSCA, BASES, NSCA).
• At least 5 years’ experience working with elite athletes in an interdisciplinary team.
• Expertise in sports science databasing, visualisation software, and assessment tools (e.g., GPS, HR technology, VALD, GymAware, force platforms).
• Proficiency in data visualisation (Tableau, Power BI) and programming languages (R, Python).
• Strong decision-making and communication skills, with a commitment to self-improvement and professional development.
• Personable, enthusiastic, with a strong work ethic and the ability to work independently.
• Experience in leading a sports science team in an elite performance setting (desirable).
• Experience in on-field/strength and conditioning gym program delivery (desirable).
• Postgraduate qualification in Sports Science or a related field (desirable).
