The VAFA has an exciting position available as a Wellbeing Project Manager and is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic person to fill this stimulating and varied role.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of steering projects, engaging and collaborating with diverse stakeholders and strong analytical and problem solving skills.

This is a full-time position, for a term of 12 months.

About the Project 

The Gambling Harm Prevention Program aims to support Australians experiencing gambling-related harm through an education program, supported by public health research and community engagement with those most likely to be impacted by online sports and racing gambling. 

Online sports and racing gambling is a serious risk to the physical and mental health of Australian men and women. The participation of Australians in online gambling increased from 12.6 per cent in 2010 to 30.7 per cent in 2019. The growth in online gambling is most prevalent among men aged 20 to 49, with evidence that women are also increasingly engaging in gambling. 

This Gambling Harm Prevention Program will be delivered across three states, utilising the existing platforms of the Victorian Amateur Football League (VAFA), the Perth Football League (PFL) and the Adelaide Football League (AdFL). These community football leagues provide an effective platform to engage the key audiences for the campaign, primarily - 16 to 35-year-old men and women. 

The three leagues serve as a vital part of grassroots community football. They are independent and not-for-profit organisations that work to support the physical and mental wellbeing of the players, coaches and volunteers involved, with the impact of participation reaching families, friends and colleagues involved. 

The program is being delivered through a Strong and Resilient Communities (SARC) Activity - Inclusive Communities Grant. This grant is an Australian Government initiative. 

Role

Three (3) Wellbeing Project Managers will be appointed to deliver the Gambling Harm Prevention Program across the VAFA, PFL and AdFL. Based in each state, the Wellbeing Project Managers will work together and within their respective state leagues. 

Each Wellbeing Project Manager will work with Project Champions (league CEOs) and the other Wellbeing Project Managers across the leagues to manage, deliver and influence the campaign to drive positive outcomes for Australians at risk of gambling-related harm. 

The Wellbeing Project Manager in each state will be responsible for delivering the project in-line with proposed activities. They will contribute to strategic planning and reporting, liaise with local clubs and their stakeholders, and be the driving force behind the successful delivery of all project activities.  

The Wellbeing Project Manager will understand the role that community football leagues play and their ability to provide an effective platform that promotes education on online sports and racing gambling to prevent harm. 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate program delivery in Victoria, liaising with all stakeholders as required  
  • Work alongside Project Champions, internal team members and affiliated clubs to deliver the project across the VAFA.  
  • Liaise with Project Manager, Purple, on the development and delivery of the program 
  • Communicate project requirements to affiliated clubs and other stakeholders 
  • Manage day-to-day communication and updates to support Project Champions in the delivery of program activity and key milestones 
  • Ongoing project management support to ensure all project activities are completed on time, within scope and in alignment with overall project goals 
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with affiliated clubs, including acting as the main contact for clubs with project-related matters 
  • Assist with the scheduling, promotion and delivery of educational workshops and training 
  • Work with Purple as the Program Manager in the development and implementation of the education campaign and supporting initiatives  
  • Support the delivery of the project in line with the proposed activity detailed in the SARC-IC Grant, including compliance with grant terms and conditions and reporting requirements 
  • Manage project-related issues as relevant to the association and ensure timely escalation to the Project Manager and the team as needed 
  • Oversee project finances and budget disbursement  
  • Build and maintain positive relationships and ensure transparent communication with all project stakeholders. 

Experience & Skills

  • Proven track record of steering major projects and initiatives to successful outcomes 
  • Understanding of the football ecosystem, ideally with experience in the sports sector 
  • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Expertise in engaging and collaborating with diverse stakeholders, with experience in the sports environment favourable 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team 
  • Interest in advocacy, with experience in representing and promoting initiatives with public interest  
  • Proficient public speaking skills, with the ability to convey the importance and impact of the campaign to varied audiences 
  • General understanding of the issues relating to gambling harm 
  • Experience in grant/project management and delivery 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability and willingness to work outside of usual business hours as required for program delivery
  • The role requires the Wellebing Project Manager to have a current Australian Drivers License and access to a vehicle
