Alpha Sapphire is a subsidiary of Alpha HPA Limited. Alpha HPA is an ASX-listed speciality metals and materials company. You will be working as part of a low environmental impact sustainable business, committed to supporting decarbonisation technologies with their innovative refining process.

This role will manage the technical function and associated engineering activities for the Sapphire site ensuring that all safety, environmental, people, cost and plant reliability objectives are met.

The Chief Technical Officer partners with the business leadership team and is responsible for the Sapphire development and operational functions, reporting into the Chief Executive Officer of Alpha Sapphire.

The role will manage technical support, sapphire product development and project support for the development of the Brisbane Sapphire Production facility. Ensure that the engineering design conforms with relevant regulations, codes and standards. We are looking for a self-motivated individual who is willing to roll up their sleeves in order to get things done whilst engaging with a dynamic team of engineers, process technicians and scientists.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing the Alpha Sapphire operations team to produce sapphire of a saleable quality
  • Provide holistic technical guidance and direction for all sapphire growing related activities
  • Identify opportunities to improve sapphire growing performance in terms of yield, process efficiency and quality
  • Report to Alpha HPA management and Alpha Sapphire CEO on technical progress and activities as required
  • Driving innovation by researching and identifying development opportunities in technology and materials science.
  • Keep abreast of broader trends in sapphire end user applications such as GaN on sapphire power semiconductors, mini and micro-LED technology and various optical applications
  • Troubleshoot quality issues with sapphire production including low angle grain boundaries, crucible materials, stress fractures and cracking, micro bubbles, cloudiness, sapphire seeding procedures and other sapphire quality indicators.
  • Identify and implement solutions for quality issues as listed above
  • Ongoing knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing techniques for SiC, Si, Sapphire substrates for semiconductors including GaN and LED semiconductors. Identifies manufacturing trends to support business technical direction
  • Undertake research as required to improve plant systems and outputs including areas such as power generation, electrical motor efficiency, control systems, maintenance systems and switch gear.
  • Ensure that all plant modifications and projects comply with relevant codes and standards.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualifications and Ph.D. preferred in physics, solid state physics, material science or other related disciplines
  • 20+ years' experience in relevant technical positions
  • Demonstrated experience in Sapphire crystal growth technologies, such as - KY, HEM, Verneuil, Czochralski and other methods.
  • Operational and Technical leadership experience in a resources/chemical or manufacturing sector/environment.
  • Self-motivated, highly pro-active and resilient attitude.
  • Relevant technical experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships, coach and mentor other technical and operational staff.
