This PhD position at the Institute for Integrated Circuits and Quantum Computing at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, Austria, is part of the consortium "Quantum-Computer-Enhanced Microscopy" funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The consortium consists of researchers in Linz (Richard Kueng, Johannes Kofler), Vienna (Thomas Juffmann, Iva Brezinova, Philipp Haslinger), Innsbruck (Philipp Schindler), and Bremen (Dennis Rätzel). The consortium will hire 5 PhD students (one in Linz, this position) and one postdoc. It adds to an already existing consortium (with 4 PhD students, one of them in Linz) along the same research line within the FWF Cluster of Excellence "Quantum Science Austria / quantA".
Your profile:
- Master's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, AI, or a closely related field
- Curiosity-driven and interested in foundational theoretical research
- English proficiency of at least level B2
In JKU's Quantum Information and Computation Group, you will be part of an interdisciplinary research team, which welcomes people from varying scientific backgrounds. The objective of the project is to replace classical detector technology such as cameras and single-pixel devices with a quantum computer and to design efficient learning strategies for imaging and sensing. Within our JKU team and in collaboration with the other members of the consortium, your research will focus on establishing a theoretical framework for such quantum-computer-enhanced detection and estimation methods from an information-theoretical point of view. We expect that this project has the potential to substantially advance the current state of the art and lead to peer-reviewed publications as well as presentations at international conferences.
We offer:
- Gross salary on a 40 hour basis, i.e.approx. 3.600 Euro per month (14 times per year), amounting to a net salary of approx. 36.000 Euro per year (note that many research groups only offer contracts on a 30 hour basis)
- One-year contract with prolongation possibility to 4 years in total
