At the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), the largest non-university institution for basic research in Austria, the Institute for Medieval Studies (IMAFO), Department of Text Edition and Source Studies/MIR, has a vacancy for

4 PhD Student Positions (fm)
(part-time, 30h per week)

to be filled as soon as possible, but no earlier than 1st April, 2023.


The SFB F9200 "Managing Maximilian Persona, Politics and Personnel through the Lens of Digital Prosopography", which will begin its work on 1st March, 2023, investigates the personal structures of the rule, administration, art and cultural production of Emperor Maximilian I.

The project will run until February 28th, 2027.

Your tasks:

In the sub-project "
Writing Maximilian" (project leader: Andreas Zajic), based at the IMAFO/Dep. MIR, detailed digests of hitherto unexplored sources on the history of Maximilian I. will be compiled according to the guidelines of the Regesta Imperii XIV and published via a specific editor (Ediarum).

In addition, the significance of the emperor's own handwriting, a palaeographic study of the hands of the members of Maximilian's chanceries and practices of cryptography will be examined, and furthermore, in accordance with the prosopographical objective of the overall project, recruitment strategies of the chancelleries will be analysed.

Your work will include guided, and with increasing project experience, more independent collaboration in the compilation of digests as well as the assumption of independent research tasks in the outlined context, if possible, also with the aim of a thematically relevant dissertation.


Your profile:

  • Completed relevant historical studies, preferably MA degree in historical research and archival science or historical ancillary sciences and archival science or equivalent qualification.
  • Ideally familiarity with the guidelines of one or more series of the Regesta Imperii, especially the Regesta Imperii XIV
  • Excellent palaeographic skills, especially in the field of late medieval cursive writing
  • Excellent knowledge of the history of the era of Maximilian I, especially of chancery and administrative history
  • Ability to carry out independent research, publications and lectures in accordance with the career level.
  • Accuracy and diligence in working with sources, creativity in developing concrete research questions
  • Ability to work in a team and enjoyment of scientific discussion processes across narrower disciplinary boundaries
