Your personal sphere of influence:

As a prae doc (scientific project staff), you will complement the WWTF Vienna Research Group for Young Investigators around Barbara Klump and take over tasks like:

  • Planning and execution of observational and experimental approaches, using a variety of non-invasive techniques
  • Statistical analysis/evaluation of multilevel data.
  • Presentation of research results at national and international conferences.
  • Publication of research results in international scientific journals.
Our research focuses on investigating the cognition and ecology of extractive foraging.

Extractive foraging - the extraction and processing of embedded or encased foods - requires intensive object manipulation and was likely an important driver of enhanced cognitive skills.

Animals have evolved both morphological (e.g. multi-purpose bill in parrots) and behavioural (e.g. tool use, prey-dropping) adaptations to access these otherwise inaccessible food items. We study carrion and hooded crows as well as sulphur-crested cockatoos - species which show many life history traits that have been identified as drivers for enhanced cognitive skills (e.g. large brains, long-lived, social).

These crows open walnuts by either pecking them open or dropping them on hard surfaces, while the cockatoos use their strong bill to open hard-shelled seed pods in various ways.

But why and when does a given bird use one technique or another, and how does resource availability influence these behaviours? This PhD project will investigate these questions on wild crows in Vienna and wild cockatoos in Sydney using observational methods and non-invasive behavioural experiments.


Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research & administration, which means:

  • You are involved in research projects and scientific studies.
  • You participate in publications, academic articles and presentations.
  • We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 612 months.
  • You work on your dissertation and its completion.
  • You take on administrative tasks in research and administration in the departmental context.
  • You can be involved in the organization of meetings, conferences, and symposiums.
  • Participation in the Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behaviour and Neuroscience (VDS CoBeNe)

This is part of your personality:

Must-haves:

  • Above average Master's degree or Diploma, preferably in biology or psychology
  • Very good ability to present and process research questions in a structured way
  • Genuine interest in studying behaviour
  • Previous experience in collecting and analysing behavioural data
  • Strong IT user skills (e.g., MS Office, statistics)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to spend up to 3 month/year in Australia for field work
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English

Nice to have:

  • Publications or basic experience in scientific work and research methods
  • Experience of designing and conducting behavioural experiments in the wild/ field work experience
  • Previous experience in conducting cognitive experiments, video analysis
  • Basic skills in R (data handling, statistical analysis)
  • Experience abroad (research, study, or both)
  • Experience with bird handling

What we offer:

Extent of Employment
:30 hours/week
The employment duration is
3 years starting 1st May 2024.

Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement:
-48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade (Salary scheme).
