Your future responsibilities:

  • Uncooled infrared bolometer arrays have become the technology of choice for lowcost infrared imaging systems. Microbolometers detectors absorb the incident electromagnetic IR radiation and cause the thermally isolated bolometer structure to increase its temperature. The temperature change, which is therefore correlated with the energy of the absorbed radiation, can be measured by a change of the electrical resistance of the thermistor material. Typically, a temperature increase of 1K in the imaged object results in a temperature increase in the bolometer in the order of few μK. Although the technology is demonstrated and mature, novel sensing materials are constantly being investigated to enhance the performance of the bolometers or decrease their production costs. Attractive materials have high temperature coefficients and low intrinsic noise due e.g. to electron traps, but also good compatibility with standard fabrication processes. The goal of the thesis is to measure the performance of microbolometers with novel materials, report the results and give feedbacks to the designers and fabrication engineers, as well as inputs for the read out circuit designers.

In this proposed master thesis, the student will:

  • Perform a literature review (scientific articles, patents).
  • Explore parameter space through FEM simulations and modelling.
  • Electrically/thermally and optically characterize test structures (single pixels, 1D and 2D arrays).
  • Perform first reliability characterization of suspended structures.
  • Extract devices figures of merit, communicate to readout design team.
  • Issue recommendations for the next design.

  • Master student in physics, microsystem technologies or similar field
  • Experience with experimental setups
  • Experience with data processing, evaluation and visualization software or language (e.g. Matlab, Python)
  • Experience with simulation software and/or CAD tools is valuable
  • Autonomy and good reporting skills
  • Good teamwork and
  • Good communication skills in English, German is an advantage
