PhD position in _geohumanitarian action_***We are recruiting a new PhD researcher in the
Christian-Doppler Laboratory GEOHUM, our
collaborative research lab with Doctors without
Borders MSF at the Department of
Geoinformatics of the University of Salzburg,
Austria.

Become part of our diverse, international team
and conduct applied and fundamental research in geospatial analysis and Earth observation to
support aid delivery of this large non-governmental organisation

Topics for your PhD:

Planetary health is the recognition that the health of humanity is dependent on the health and
proper functioning of the natural systems that sustain us. With a plethora of geospatial data from a
multitude of providers and platforms at our disposal, we now have the means to support the
monitoring and projection of planetary health. But how can we make sure that we identify the most
suitable data, regularly and on time, process it correctly, and draw the right conclusions to better
understand and predict the transmission of vector borne diseases and other phenomena affected by
climate change or the deterioration of planetary health? To address these questions, you will work

on topics, such as:

  • Big (EO) data
  • Development of a spacetime data model
  • Geospatial data assimilation and integration techniques for indicatorbased (risk)
assessments

  • Climate change risk assessment strategies for vector borne diseases
  • Climate change and urban health
  • Environmental impact assessments of large refugee camps and semipermanent urban

structures
Your profile:
MSc degree in Geoinformatics, Geography or similar or MSc degree in Computer Science with

curricular courses in Geoinformatics or related fields

contribution factors and their relationships

  • Ability to develop a systemic perspective on integrated risks and other complex socio
- ecological phenomena

  • Willingness to learn performing integrated indicatorbased assessments, including:
‒ Topic scoping

‒ Identification of information needs

‒ Thematic deep dive into context

‒ Data research and harvesting

‒ Data integration and harmonization

‒ Analysis, visualization, and communication of results

  • Basic understanding of R and willingness to use it for data harvesting and integration
routines or to translate existing R scripts to a development environment of your choice

  • Excellent
    communication skills are required to work in an interdisciplinary and dynamic
team as well as the ability to conduct research independently

  • Working language is English

Job conditions:

  • Job announcement open until
    15 May 2023

Starting date:
July 2023

- up to 75% employment (30 hours/week)

  • Initial contract duration is 24 months, with possibility for extension
  • Remuneration according to the Austrian University collective bargaining agreement (fulltime
gross salary per month min. € 3.277,30 (14 × per year, B1) based on 40 hours per week)
