The Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies (IHB), research unit History of the Habsburg Monarchy, of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria's leading non-university research and science institution, conducts basic research unearthing, preserving and interpreting cultural heritage.

Employing a large range of methodological approaches across different epochs, our research considers fundamental questions on history and culture of the Habsburg and Balkan territories.

This focus not only concerns history and art history, but also anthropological and linguistic questions, providing historical orientational knowledge via scholarly projects and publications.

Research findings are actively fed into scholarly discourse and are also disseminated to the non-specialist public. To this end, the Institute tests and develops new, contemporary methods and formats. The research unit "Digital Historiography and Editions" of the IHB is offering a

Phd Student Position (f/m/x)
(part-time, 30h per week)

in the project "GraViz:

The Ottoman Grand Vizierate (1560s to 1760s)." _GraViz_ is a three-year project funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

The project will be conducted as part of the ongoing IHB project "Digital Edition of Sources on Habsburg-Ottoman Diplomacy " ). The position is limited to 36 months. The start is scheduled for September 1st, 2023.

Your tasks:

  • Editing of documents according to the edition guidelines of the project
  • Participation in the administration of the project
  • Presentation of results at workshops and conferences
  • Publication of results and development of a concept for a dissertation in the thematic field of the project

Your profile:

  • This position requires advanced linguistic and palaeographical skills:
  • Professional command of written and spoken academic English
  • Excellent command of Ottoman Turkish and Persian
  • Knowledge of modern Turkish and/or Arabic and/or Urdu is an advantage
  • Completed BA and/or MA studies in history and an ongoing doctoral study in history
  • Experience in archival research, especially with handwritten early modern sources
  • Working experience with TRANSKRIBUS, TEI, and other digital editing tools OR strong willingness to learn them
  • Flexibility, communication skills, creativity, and readiness to work in an international team


We offer the opportunity to participate in an internationally networked research project and develop knowledge and skills in digital humanities and digital data presentation.

For this position we offer an annual gross salary of € 32.297,58 according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
