The Institute of Iranian Studies (IFI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OEAW) and the Faculty
of Historical and Cultural Studies of the University of Vienna jointly offer a position as a

Group Leader and a Tenure Track Professorship (M/F/d)

for
**Caucasus Studies
(full employment).

Your responsibilities:

  • Developing an independent Caucasusrelated cultural and social historical research profile in
its temporal and spatial dimensions as well as a project portfolio in the research framework
of the IFI

  • Developing a Caucasus research program at the Faculty Centre for Transdisciplinary
Historical-Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna and contributing to and participating in
the activities of the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna

  • Teaching two semester hours per week (to be raised to four semester hours per week after
evaluation)

  • Establishing and managing a Caucasus Forum that coordinates the existing and new Austrian
research activities on the Caucasus.

Your profile:

  • Doctoral degree in a discipline related to the field of Caucasus Studies
  • Strong track record in Caucasus Studies ideally covering the entire Caucasus, its (relations to)
neighbouring regions and the larger Eurasian area; an excellent publication record and
international reputation

  • Open mindedness towards novel approaches from the social science and contemporary
history

  • Research related competences in at least one regional language and in at least one of the
historical transregional languages of the region

  • Strong record in designing and implementing research projects; leadership experience;
willingness to secure third-party funding

  • Potential to successfully acquire an ERC grant or a comparable prestigious grant within the
qualification period

  • Enthusiasm for excellent teaching; teaching experience at universities or teaching concept;
ability and willingness to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to supervise Masters
and PhD students, and to mentor early career researchers
contributing to management and administration in both institutions.

We offer:

  • An employment of 50% at the OEAW and 50% at the University of Vienna: a position as "group
leader" at the Institute of Iranian Studies (IFI) of the OEAW, which will become permanent
upon successful evaluation; the prospect of gaining a tenured position of an associate
professor and the option of an eventual promotion to the rank of full professor at the

professor for a maximum of six years. Upon meeting the criteria outlined in the qualification
agreement, the assistant professor will attain the status of a tenured associate professor,
thereby obtaining a tenured position at the university. A further promotion of an associate
professors to the rank of full professor is contingent upon a competitive university-internal
