The Acoustics Research Institute (ARI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria's leading non
- university research facility, undertakes top-level research in auditory cognitive neuroscience, psychoacoustics

and experimental audiology, phonetics, bioacoustics, physical and computational acoustics, mathematics and

signal processing as well as machine learning in acoustics. The close interaction of the working groups allows

innovative research approaches through the synergistic effects of multidisciplinary research. The ARI employs

~50 academic, technical and administrative staff. The institute is offering a

POSTDOC POSITION (F/M/X)
(part-time, 12h per week)

The position is assigned to an FWF-funded project "Sound As Score" coordinated by Elisabeth Schimana

(MDW), with the ARI-based co-principal investigator Piotr Majdak. The project goal is to better understand how

sound scores are perceived and interpreted by a musician. The focus of this position is to perform psychoacous
- tic analyses in order to help the composers to better understand the requirements of timing, pitch, and spectral

features of sound.

Responsibilities:

  • Transfer of knowledge from the psychoacoustic research to artistic research.
  • Implementation and performance of psychoacoustic analyses of the livegenerated score.
  • Implementation of auditory models supporting the psychoacoustic analyses of music.
  • Assistance in the development of compositions based on a livegenerated audio score.
  • Communication of scientific results in scientific publications and at scientific meetings.
  • No teaching duties.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • PhD degree (or equivalent) in audio engineering, auditory research, or a related field
  • Experience in auditory modelling and psychoacoustic analyses
  • Profound knowledge of written and oral English.
The position is limited to 30 months. The starting date is June 01st, 2024. We offer an annual gross salary of €

19.950,42 according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
