UNODC is committed to helping States to prevent crime and build the capacity of their criminal justice systems to operate more effectively within the framework of the rule of law.

Crime and violence require a balanced approach, with sufficient investment in evidence-based crime prevention programmes and policies as well as efforts to establish and maintain criminal justice institutions that are effective, can be held accountable and provide justice for all.

The United Nations standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice offer the guidance needed to make this happen.


This vacancy announcement is for 1 internship position starting in April 2023 for a period of four to six months.

Please be advised that the internship is full-time in Vienna and UNPAID. Interns work five days per week (40 hours).

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on political and legal aspects of crime prevention and criminal justice reform and contribute to the preparation of UNODC publications, background notes, reports, briefing materials, presentations, correspondences with Member State governments, talking points and speeches;
  • Assist in staff members' preparation of technical assistance missions, workshops, meetings, highlevel events and conferences, including support to field offices;
  • Attend and take notes at various meetings;
  • Perform other tasks as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this position, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, particularly French or Spanish, is an advantage.
