Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) is responsible for implementing the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme to safeguard people and the environment from radiation exposure. The Office of Safety and Security Coordination (NSOC) operates under the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department. Its goal is to ensure technical consistency and efficient coordination of the IAEA's activities in nuclear, radiation, transport, and waste safety, and nuclear security.

The office consists of three main sections:

  • Programme and Strategy Coordination Section
  • Networks Management and Partnership Section
  • Safety Standards and Security Guidance Development Section

Main Purpose

As the Senior Safety Officer, you will report to the Head of the Programme and Strategy Coordination Section. Your role involves developing and implementing programme activities to enhance coordination internally and externally and continuously improving Major Programme 3.

Role

The Senior Safety Officer acts as an analyst, coordinator, expert, and scientific secretary/technical expert:

  • Reviewing and analyzing complex information
  • Leading the development of documents
  • Providing advice on nuclear safety and security
  • Planning and implementing meetings

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Coordinate report and document preparation for policy-making organs
  • Provide Scientific Secretariat of the International Nuclear Safety Advisory Group (INSAG)
  • Offer senior managers insights on nuclear safety and security
  • Advise on opportunities for coordination and cooperation with other organizations
  • Collect, analyze, and prepare various informational materials

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

The ideal candidate should have a Master's Degree in nuclear or other engineering sciences and at least ten years of experience in nuclear/radiation safety or security. Proficiency in English is mandatory, and knowledge of other official IAEA languages is a plus.
