Technical Director, Hydropower – Mechanical


The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Technical Director, Hydropower - Mechanical to oversee the delivery of design for major hydropower projects in the Australia and New Zealand region. With a significant workload from ongoing pumped hydropower energy storage projects, and a strong and growing pipeline of future work Mott MacDonald is a trusted consultant for the provision of high-quality technical services in this sector.


In addition to project delivery there is opportunity to engage in business development and build client relationships to enable further growth of our hydropower business. We have already delivered more than 100GW of hydropower and pumped storage across the globe, from technical advisory services, through to Owner’s Engineer and Contractor’s Designer.

We are seeking experienced candidates excited by the opportunity to work alongside our subject matter experts and deliver not only these projects in ANZ, but also support our wider global hydro and pumped hydro teams in Asia, Europe and the United States of America.

As the lead Mechanical Engineer in the Hydropower team your job will be varied and include technical work, project management and project direction. You will have responsibility for both technical and commercial delivery, preparing proposals to win new work, and providing guidance across several projects.

Additionally, the scope will include:

  • Providing mechanical technical direction in hydropower and energy projects, specifically with respect to turbine-generators, primary plant, and secondary systems.
  • Working with external stakeholders, ensuring client satisfaction and pursuing and promoting opportunities with potential and established clients.
  • Design management within the mechanical engineering field and more broadly, including managing to programme, budget and quality requirements.
  • Demonstrating technical expertise, providing in depth knowledge and leadership whilst proactively coaching, mentoring and developing more junior team members.

Mott MacDonald is looking for the best international practitioners in this field and welcomes applicants worldwide. Work location can be flexible, and candidates can be based internationally or in our Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, or Brisbane offices.

About you
We are seeking an engineering specialist who is proactive, will take responsibility for the tasks assigned and is interested in developing professionally. You will need to have substantial experience in the power industry with hydropower-specific experience. Your knowledge and practice experience working on projects with a consultant, developer, owner or contractor will set you up for success. You’ll also need the following qualifications and capabilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a Chartered Engineer with professional registration (or ability to obtain) 
  • Experience in the design of mechanical engineering works for hydropower, energy and dams projects at concept and detailed design stages.
  • Experience of working with OEM suppliers including review and integration of their designs.
  • Familiarity with the broader disciplines required for hydropower projects and experience with inter-discipline liaison and management of interfaces.
