Position Title: General Surgery Postgraduate Fellow

Employment Type:  Full Time
Classification: Registrar 1 – 4
Salary: $218,553 (Plus 11.5% Super)
Location:  The Canberra Hospital, Woden. North Canberra Hospital, Bruce

Canberra Health Services (CHS) is focussed on the delivery of high quality, effective, person-centred care. It provides acute, sub-acute, primary and community‐based health services, to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and surrounding regions. More information can be found on the CHS website .

The Canberra Hospital is a tertiary referral and teaching hospital within the ACT. The Department of General Surgery is part of the Division of Surgery, which comprises all the major surgical subspecialties most with accredited training programs.

The Department of General Surgery exists of three elective units (General Surgery/Breast & Endocrine, Colorectal and Upper GI & HPB) as well as an Acute Surgical Unit and the Shock Trauma Service. As Post Graduate Fellow, you will be working alongside non-accredited and accredited registrars and consultants with the aim to deliver a 24/7 comprehensive service to the community.

During the year you will rotate in 4- months rotations in Acute Surgery, Trauma and elective Colorectal. The Upper GI&HPB rotation is an ANZHPBA recognized training position and only available if remaining vacant.

DUTIES

1. Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of Canberra Health Services under the supervision and direction of Consultant Medical Practitioner. The clinical management includes acute admissions, in-patient care, outpatient clinics, inter -disciplinary consults and clinical handover

2. Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff and participate in undergraduate & postgraduate teaching as directed by Professor of Surgery/Unit Director. Maintain adequate and legible medical records and ensure that the clinical team completes discharge summaries in a timely manner

3. Demonstrate progress in training in the specialty including participation in the relevant teaching program and activities, timely completion of assessments and involvement in research

4. Participate in the after-hours and on-call roster

5. Currency in an Advanced Life Support Course to be attained within three months of commencement with annual refreshers

6. Contribute to clinical audit and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care

7. Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the policies of Canberra Health Services. This includes the promotion and application of workplace relations, workplace equity and diversity and workplace safety; and

  • Undertake other duties appropriate to this level of classification which contribute to the operation of the organisation.

  • CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record . Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies. .

· Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities, involvement in research, and teaching of junior medical staff and/or medical students

Please note prior to commencement successful candidates will be required to:

· Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); and

· Tertiary qualifications or equivalent in General Surgery (e.g. FRACS) and eligibility for membership of the appropriate professional organization, and must hold a current driver’s license.

· Undergo a pre-employment Police check; and

· Obtain a Certificate of Compliance from the Occupational Medicine Unit (OMU) relating to assessment, screening and vaccination processes.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the maintenance and further development of skills applicable to the area of Surgery, including involvement in further education and quality assurance activities.

2. Post graduate surgical and academic qualifications and experience relevant to the position.

3. A commitment to the importance and provision of teaching at all levels, including medical, nursing, scientific and allied health professional staff, both postgraduate and undergraduate.

4. Demonstrated commitment to research.

5. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership where required.

6. Demonstrates understanding of, and adherence to, safety and quality standards, work, health and safety (WH&S) and the positive patient experience. Displays behaviour consistent with CHS’s values of reliable, progressive, respectful and kind.
