Canberra Hospital is its principal location. It is a modern 600 bed hospital and the major tertiary teaching hospital for the Australian Capital Territory and surrounding NSW region serving a population of 0.5 million. The annual caseload is over 19,000.

The Canberra Hospital’s Anaesthesia Department and Pain Management has positions for 18.5 Registrars and 4 Senior Registrars/Postgraduate Fellows. The Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Management at Canberra Hospital provides a comprehensive range of clinical anaesthesia services for most surgical specialties including cardiothoracic-, neuro- and paediatric surgery along with an active preadmission clinic, a post-anaesthesia care unit and an acute and chronic pain management service. Canberra Hospital also play a major role in the Capital Region Retrieval Service with the Snowy Mountains Hydro Southcare helicopter.

The hospital has 13 operating theatres (including a dedicated MRI neuroanaesthesia suite) and a 14-bed intensive care unit with an additional 10 high care beds. In addition, the Department of Anaesthesia meets a number of out-of-areas requirements for anaesthesia or sedation, such as gastroenterology, angiography and brachytherapy.

Professor Thomas Bruessel holds the inaugural Chair of Anaesthesia at the Australian National University (ANU). The Department and.

Calvary Public Hospital is accredited for 6 Registrars. It is a modern healthcare service complex comprising a 174-bed public district general hospital.

Both hospitals are teaching hospitals of the Australian National University (ANU) Medical School and have strong research links to the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the ANU as well as to the University of Canberra.

Albury Base Hospital and Wagga Wagga Base Hospital are the other hospitals participating in the Canberra Region Rotation Registrar Training Program. Both hospitals provide acute and community health care services.

Under limited direction of the unit director you will perform you will:

• Provide competent and efficient clinical management of patients of the Health Directorate under the supervision and direction of the Consultant Medical Practitioner;
• Participate in the ANZCA training.Candidates are expected to have passed the final examination ad completed the requirements of advanced training prior to the commencement date of the fellowship;
• Contribute to clinical audit and research and participate in changes that improve quality and safety of patient care;
• Participate in the supervision, training and professional development of junior medical staff;
• Comply with the policies and requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and the policies of the Health Directorate. This includes the promotion and application of workplace relations, workplace equity and diversity and workplace safety; and
• Undertaking other duties as directed, within the approved scope of clinical practice.

Position Requirements / Qualifications

Mandatory

· The successful applicant will need to be available for occasional weekend and after-hours work, with access to flex time.

· Demonstrate commitment to training and continuing professional development including participation in relevant teaching programs, activities, and feedback opportunities,

· Be registered or be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA);

• Tertiary qualifications or equivalent in medicine and eligibility for membership with ANZCA;
• Have completed all requirements for the completion of Advanced Training, or be able to show these will be satisfied prior to commencement date of this position
• CHS is leading the drive to digitally transform health service delivery in Australia through the implementation of a territory wide Digital Health Record . Computer literacy skills are required which are relevant to this role as you will be responsible for completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of the Digital Health Record and/or other Information Technology systems; once proficient, you will need to remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.
