The Government of the Republic of Nauru is seeking to recruit an experienced lawyer with a demonstrated track record in civil litigation work, in a common law jurisdiction, preferably in the Pacific. Working under the supervision of the Solicitor General, the successful applicant will be part of a small team of legal professionals, fostering and growing external partnerships with key stakeholders, including the Department of Justice and Border Control and the Department of the Judiciary. 

  • To appear for the Republic for Mentions, Hearings of interlocutory civil proceedings and Hearings of substantive civil matters in the Supreme Court and the Nauru Court of Appeal.
  • To draft legal submissions and documents for interlocutory and substantive proceedings in the Supreme Court and the Nauru Court of Appeal.
  • To undertake legal research and analysis and provide legal advice on matters assigned by the Solicitor General.
  • To vet and clear contracts, leases, Memorandums of Understanding as assigned by the Solicitor General.
  • To draft, review and vet policies as assigned by the Solicitor General.
  • To assist in managing the function of the Office in respect of office management, file management, case management and record keeping.
  • To organise his or her work and responsibilities within the Office.
  • To assist in managing staff diligently and proactively address workplace issues in the Office.
  • To carry out any other relevant work that may be directed by the Solicitor General from time to time.

Required Qualification, Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor of Laws.
  • Admission to practice as a legal practitioner in a common law jurisdiction.
  • At least 7 to 9 years’ experience in litigation and civil law.

  • The ability to multi-task, organise and prioritise work.
  • A mature professional with high standard of integrity.
  • Willingness to work and adapt to the constraints of small community with limitations and respect for different culture and expectations.

The successful candidate will receive a market competitive salary & rent-free accommodation. Recreation leave of 20 days annually and free on-island medical will be provided.
