Appointment to the Professional Standards Council of Victoria - Expressions of Interest

The Hon Jaclyn Symes MP, Attorney-General, seeks expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as a member of the Professional Standards Council of Victoria.

About the Professional Standards Council of Victoria

The Professional Standards Councils are independent statutory bodies with powers to assess and approve applications from occupational associations for professional standards schemes that limit the civil liability of members.

The Councils play a key role in improving professional standards and protecting consumers by:

  • Monitoring how well associations and their members meet the standards demanded by their professional standards schemes
  • Providing Ministers with advice regarding the professional standards of members of associations, including the operation of professional standards schemes
  • Encouraging and assisting the development of associations' regulation of their members and the protection of consumers
  • Delivering research, resources, advice and information on professional standards and regulation
  • Determining future projects to build the capacity of associations to protect consumers and improve professional standards.

About the role

The time commitment of Councils’ members is approximately one to three days per month, which includes reading comprehensive papers for meetings, and the interpretation of each is relied on to make complex public-interest decisions. Council members may attend meetings either in-person (Sydney CBD) or on-line.

Council members are required to fulfil the statutory and financial responsibilities of a Council member and understand the role of statutory decision-making from an industry and government perspective.

Who we're looking for

Expressions of interest are sought from suitable candidates with:

  • Experience at a senior level in a profession or professional association, occupational regulation, professional standards or consumer protection.
  • A background in one or more of the following areas:
  • accounting,
  • financial services
  • actuarial science,
  • complaints and disciplinary systems,
  • continuous improvement strategies,
  • legal services,
  • professional ethics,
  • professional indemnity insurance,
  • professional negligence litigation,
  • risk management/compliance systems,
  • senior government policy or regulatory experience.

Our commitment to diversity

The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring that government boards and committees reflect the rich diversity of the Victorian community.

We encourage applications from women, people of all ages, Aboriginal people, people with disability, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, LGBTIQA+ people, and people living in rural and regional Victoria. We will provide adjustments to the recruitment process upon request.

We invite you to tell us if you identify as Aboriginal, a person with disability, from a culturally or linguistically diverse background, LGBTIQA+ or a young person, aged 25 years old or less. If you identify as any of the aforementioned, we would welcome the opportunity to contact you and discuss how we can support you through the recruitment process.
