Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Mexico is part of a world-wide network, representing UK political, economic, and consular interests overseas. We are now looking for a Digital Communications Manager to be part of the Press and Communications Team. 

The selected candidate will lead on all digital and social media activities, on the creation of social media content and on the delivery of marketing and branding of events and campaigns in support of the Mexico Country Business Plan. The successful candidate will work to deliver the Embassy’s digital and social media strategy, using a wide range of communications and public diplomacy tools, and play an integral role as part of the wider team.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Design, lead and deliver a refreshed digital communications strategy linking to the FCDO strategy and Embassy objectives, planning, and executing content on social media, evaluating impact, and suggesting improvements. 
  • Produce high quality creative and engaging visual content, identifying innovative solutions for the @UKinMexico social media handles.
  • Lead on social media monitoring for topics and conversations that are relevant for the UK and Mexico and carry out community management activities on social media. 
  • Prepare monitoring and evaluation reports of social media and digital activities and initiatives, based on data and analytics.
  • Lead on content creator engagement and outreach initiatives that support public diplomacy and soft power objectives.
  • Keep our gov.uk site up to date with relevant information for our audiences.
  • Work with colleagues across all teams in the Embassy to help translate our priorities and objectives into digital media messages to increase the local profile and impact of our work. 
  • Follow central campaigns from London, adapt these for local audiences and create innovative and engaging local content to increase our reach. 
  • Contribute to the wider Embassy’s public diplomacy work, campaigns, and major events to promote the UK, including supporting communications in a crisis. 
  • All Embassy staff are also expected to contribute to the wider corporate agenda.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • 3+ years of experience leading, designing, and implementing digital and using social media strategies, or of managing and creating content for social media, including LinkedIn, Instagram, X and Facebook
  • Experience in content creator outreach and social media campaigns. 
  • Excellent content creation skills, including photography/videography; social media production, and graphic design skills 
  • Excellent writing skills; ability to draft engaging content for social media in Spanish and English 
  • Experience in developing campaign content and messaging for a variety of channels 
  • Excellent networking skills, collaborative approach to team working 
  • Attention to detail, strong organisational and time managements skills 
  • Understanding of local media, PR, and communications environment

Language requirements: 

Language: English & Spanish.
Level of language required: Excellent language skills both written and spoken.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Understanding of international relations and an interest in the UK 
  • Experience working with governmental agencies or international organisations 
  • Experience in social media monitoring and evaluation tools 
  • A proactive, self-starter with strong time management skills 
  • Experience in working with a wide range of stakeholders and broad network of contacts 
  • Previous line management experience

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.

Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

Monday – Thursday 08:00 – 16:30, Friday 08:00 – 14:00

FCDO offers a flexible working policy and some homeworking arrangements (currently two days per week) are possible on agreement with line manager.
