Who we are:

Uppercut Games builds original, experimental, and immersive games for a global audience. Founded in 2011 by industry veterans best known for their work on the Bioshock series, Uppercut Games has released multiple games across mobile, PC, Xbox One and PS4 - including the EPOCH series, the Submerged series, and City of Brass. 

We are returning to our roots in AAA game development with a ground-breaking and genre-busting new project. To create and deliver this highly ambitious and exciting original title, we’re looking for developers across a range of disciplines and levels of experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote a positive and inclusive culture within the design team, and within the studio more broadly
  • Build and develop a highly effective, productive and creative design team:
    • Supervise and mentor design team and champion cutting edge design practices
    • Lead design team recruitment in collaboration with Design Director and HR, with a focus on improving diversity and inclusion within Uppercut and the games industry in general
    • Manage the professional development of team members to build design team capability, including actively sharing experiences with design and project management with other team members
    • Monitoring and promoting design team wellbeing, including signaling any potential issues to HR and leadership team and holding quarterly reviews with design team staff
  • Manage the work of the design team under the direction of the Design Director, including:
    • Creation and prioritisation of tasks
    • Ensure implementation of design features and tasks in line with the design vision provided by the Design Director
    • Development of design review and feedback processes
    • Oversee high quality design documentation and quality review 
    • Supervise focus/user testing
  • Ensure design team’s work is integrated effectively with overall production of the game
    • Collaborate with other team leads, directors and producers to build a healthy and collegiate work environment, and to ensure communication across teams is transparent, frictionless and constructive
    • Develop effective processes and work pipelines for design work
    • Work with production and studio leadership on long term project planning, milestone scheduling and and feature dependency tracking
    • Lead feature teams and take ownership for delivery of features
  • Lead the design and development of critical gameplay systems
    • Work with the Design Director and contribute to the overall design of the game
    • Provide high quality critical feedback from a design perspective on design tasks and ideas
    • Assessing technical and scoping impacts of new design concepts and making feasibility recommendations to Design Director and other team leads

Required:

  • Working knowledge of project management and task management tools (such as JIRA)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High level time management capabilities
  • Understanding of test processes
  • Ability to discover deliverables, action items, and requirements out of ambiguity
  • Adapts well to change
  • Highly dependable and able to build trusting relationships with engineers and project leadership
  • Experience working in video games development, with multiple shipped titles.

This role can be based either remotely within Australia/New Zealand, or onsite at our studio in Canberra, ACT.
