To connect people seeking asylum with opportunities in the community in line with their interests, goals, and needs.

Purpose / Objective: To connect people seeking asylum with opportunities in the community in line with their interests, goals, and needs.
Reports to: Resources Coordinator
Commitment Period: Minimum 3 months. The role is ongoing.
Days and hours required per week: 4 hours minimum per week. Days and times are flexible and can be negotiated.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Facilitate links between people seeking asylum with social, cultural and recreational support and opportunities in the community in line with their identified interests, goals and needs (e.g. research local sports clubs, check their access conditions and ability to support vulnerable people, link the ASC participant with a suitable organisation). 
  • (Optional) Accompany the participant to the first session of the new activity, ensuring they arrive safely, are welcomed, and the host understands the participant’s situation within the boundaries of confidentiality.
  • Promote independence and help the people we support to develop skills so that they can become independent members of the community. 
  • Build on and regularly update ASC’s Service Map and related program documentation.
  • Collaborate with the Community Engagement Team to support organisations and community groups to identify and remove barriers that prevent people seeking asylum access those services. 
  • Complete data reporting tasks in an accurate and timely manner, including tracking and evaluating outcomes with each referral for connection.
  • Other as reasonably requested by the line manager.

Selection Criteria
  • General Conditions
  • Experience in working with vulnerable people from various backgrounds and cultures
  • Intermediate computer skills (confidence in using the internet and emails)
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers 
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on extra tasks as appropriate
  • Ability to adhere to policies in relation to code of conduct, boundaries and confidentiality
  • Sound knowledge of Sydney’s social and recreation services landscape or ability to quickly learn.
  • Ability to build stakeholder networks with community organisations, turning connections into tangible results for people seeking asylum.
  • Ability to facilitate warm referrals between people seeking asylum and community organisations. 
  • Volunteers who bring existing networks in the Inner West or Western Suburbs of Sydney will be highly regarded.
  • Flexibility to work remotely or from ASC’s Newtown office.
Desirable
  • First Aid Certificate with current CPR component

All ASC staff and volunteers are required to:
  • Adhere to ASC’s vision, purpose, and values
  • Act at all times in accordance with ASC’s Code of Conduct, Boundaries Handbook, and Child Protection Policies
  • Comply with Work, Health, and Safety systems
  • Comply with Incident Management Procedures and emergency protocols
  • Demonstrate respectful and welcoming behaviour with all people at ASC in culturally appropriate ways
  • Undertake a NSW Working with Children Check prior to commencement and ensure it is up-to-date
  • Support a child-safe organisation by undertaking screening for suitability to work with children and vulnerable people and to comply with relevant state/territory legislative requirements
  • The Volunteer will receive a thorough induction and orientation to their role and to ASC including a detailed Workplace, Health & Safety briefing.
