Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.

Main Purpose

The Director leads the Division of about 40 Professional and about 30 General Service staff and reports to both the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, and the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy. The Director manages the staff and ensures that the Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences provides results based programmatic responses to Member States' priorities in the programmatic areas outlined above.

Role

The Director is: (1) a leader, providing strategic direction and ensuring motivating work environment in the Division, promoting good performance and teamwork and creating an atmosphere where staff can develop their skills and share knowledge and experience: (2) an adviser and coordinator to the Deputy Directors General on such issues as strategy and policy, as well as trends, impacting the areas of nuclear science, water resource management using isotope hydrology and radioisotope production and radiation technology; (3) a principal adviser to the Deputy Directors General on programme delivery in response to Member States needs; (4) a manager of the human and financial resources assigned to the Division, responsible for the efficient and effective development and implementation of the programme areas under the responsibility of the Division in line with the results based management approach.

Lead the Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences, providing direction and guidance to staff, and establishing and monitoring standards of excellence in performance.
Foster international and regional cooperation, networking and sharing of practical experience and the effective use of nuclear technology between Member States.
Inspire a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the division, clearly communicating the vision, goals, and expectations to the staff, fostering a sense of purpose and commitment. Implement an effective performance and programme monitoring and assessment, ensuring that outcomes are fully in line with stated programme objectives providing constructive feedback for professional development and engaging regularly on staff performance and provide guidance.
Represent and promote the IAEA and its scientific standing at international conferences and forums and liaise with senior-level representatives in scientific institutions and other international organizations to gain awareness of emerging trends.
Strengthen IAEA cooperation with other international organizations through synergetic activities.
Build and maintain strategic institutional partnerships and alliances with a wide range of stakeholders in Member States.
Initiate and oversee research and development projects, and provide technical guidance to Member States in the areas falling within the scope of the Division's mandate.
Collaborate with other Divisions of the Agency and foster a culture of cross-divisional cooperation, encouraging knowledge-sharing and joint initiatives in the areas of common interests.
