**Legal Counsel, Europe**
ADF International is looking for a highly professional **Legal Counsel **to join us in our Vienna office. As Legal Counsel based in Vienna, you are a vital part of the European Advocacy Team. You will report to the Director of European Advocacy and are responsible for supporting the advocacy work of ADF International to win the battle for religious freedom, freedom of expression, life, marriage, the family and the rights of parents.
You have had training and acquired practical experience in public international law, particularly human rights law and have some professional experience in drafting legal documents and memorandums, advising clients, and filing and trying cases before courts of law in an EEA country. You are expected to engage at the EU, ECHR, and related institutions, as well as on a national level while working collectively with allies and building coalitions.
**Your Essential Responsibilities**:
In this position, you will:
- Conduct in-depth and high-quality legal research;
- Obtain clients and lead, join or assist senior counsel in efforts to establish positive precedents at the highest available courts or governmental bodies;
- Draft scholarly reports, white papers, and legal memorandums;
- Write and publish articles on ADF International core issues;
- Engage the media through op-eds, commentaries, and quotes connected to ADF International work, as well as conducting interviews on radio or television;
- Build and maintain a growing network of lawyers, students, church leaders, public intellectuals, NGO leaders, business leaders, academics, diplomats, policy makers and law makers to advance the advocacy aims of ADF International;
- Provide training to Christian lawyers who are seeking to engage with the work and mission of ADF International.
**Other Responsibilities**:
- You may be asked to perform related duties or special projects as assigned within the general scope of the position.
**Skills you need to succeed**:
Knowledge of:
- Human rights law, EU law, and public international law
- Key threats to life, marriage and the family, and religious freedom in Europe and the wider international context
- Running successful advocacy campaigns in Europe
- Political affairs within a wider European context
Demonstrated proficiency in:
- High level legal analysis, research, and writing
- Alliance-building, networking, and relationship development
- Strong communication skills
- Handling multiple complex matters working with a multi-disciplinary and international team
- Public speaking both in a training and persuasive setting as well as the ability to handle hostile approaches
- Strong attention to detail and proven project management skills
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office
Ability to:
- Fluently speak and write in English
- Fluently speak and write in at least one other European language (German preferred)
- Live and work in Vienna, Austria, and travel internationally including sometimes at short notice
- Prioritize and achieve goals within agreed deadlines
- Professionally handle confidential information
Education and/or experience:
- Ideally, advanced degree or law degree
- Three or more years of experience in legal work (qualified lawyer preferred)
**Valid work permit for Austria or EU citizenship required.
