**POSTDOC POSITION (F/M/X)**
**_in German Studies _**

(part-time, 20h per week)

in the ERC Starting-Grant “ARITHMETIC. German Arithmetical Treatises in Manuscripts of the Late Middle Ages

(1400-1522). A Study on Philology, History and Culture based on a Digital Edition of the Treatises.” for a duration

of 42 months (March 1st, 2024 until August 31st, 2027).

We study handwritten German arithmetic treatises from their first appearance around 1400 until the time when

printed reckoning-books became easily available at the beginning of the 16th century. One major goal of this project

is a detailed linguistic analysis focusing on semantics, syntax, the vocabulary, and the transmission context of the

textual material.

**Your tasks**:

- Detailed linguistic analysis of the German corpus with a strong focus on oral linguistics, historical

pragmatics, and the development of a mathematical jargon
- Construction of a digital glossary on a late medieval German mathematical jargon
- Dissemination of the research findings in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets
- Participation and organizational support in conferences, workshops (of the project) and in institute’s

events.

**Your profile**:

- PhD or equivalent degree with a specialization in history of German language/linguistics
- Experience in the fields of historic pragmatism, lexicography, and historical special language research
- Experience in the supervision of junior researchers
- Experience in scholarly communication (conference participation, organization of workshops and

scholarly gatherings)
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well within a research team
- German Native speaker; very good English is required
