Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.The Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) is part of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security and reports to the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department. The IEC serves as the IAEA's focal point for preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies regardless of their cause, and for strengthening Member States' preparedness for response.

Main Purpose

The Emergency Preparedness Officer works under the supervision of the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and is responsible for implementing different activities to support Member States preparedness to respond to nuclear or radiological incidents and emergencies. In particular, he/she is expected to organize and implement training and other capacity building activities in emergency preparedness and response, implement relevant peer reviews and advisory missions, and provide technical advice for the design, implementation and follow up of projects in emergency preparedness and response at national and regional levels. He/she contributes on the development and maintenance of Safety Standards, various technical guidance and tools related to emergency preparedness and response.

- Develop Safety Standards, technical guidance and tools in preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies.
- Provide technical inputs and background information required for the organization of training courses, workshops and exercises, such as training materials, exercise scenarios, etc.
- Implement peer review and advisory missions in nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response.
- Provide technical inputs and background information required for the design, implementation and follow up of national, regional and inter-regional projects on emergency preparedness and response.
- Provide support and relevant expertise for the Incident and Emergency System (IES) and participate in associated training and exercises.
