Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.The Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) is part of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security and reports to the Deputy Director General, Head of the Department. The IEC serves as the IAEA's focal point for preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies regardless of their cause, and for strengthening Member States' preparedness for response.

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, the Emergency Preparedness Officer is responsible for implementing different activities to support Member States preparedness to respond to nuclear or radiological safety and security related incidents and emergencies. In particular, he/she is expected to contribute to the development and maintenance of safety standards and associated technical guidance on various aspects of emergency preparedness and response, especially those related to the development of decision-making criteria and associated protective actions, as well as their basis associated with radiation doses-health effects relationship, to organize and implement training and other capacity building activities in emergency preparedness and response, implement relevant peer reviews and advisory missions, and provide technical advice for the design, implementation and follow up of projects in emergency preparedness and response at national and regional levels.

- Provide technical inputs and background information required for the design, implementation and follow up of projects on emergency preparedness and response, especially those related to development of decision-making criteria and associated protective actions, as well as their basis associated primarily with the radiation dose - health effects relationship.
- Develop safety standards, technical guidelines and tools on emergency preparedness and response, especially those related to the decision-making criteria and associated protective actions, as well as their basis associated primarily with radiation doses-health effects relationship, to provide adequate reference to Member States for development, and continuous improvement of robust arrangements for preparedness for and response to nuclear and radiological safety and security related incidents and emergencies.
- Provide technical inputs and background information required for the organization of training courses, workshops and exercises, such as training materials and exercise scenarios.
- Implement peer review and advisory missions related to preparedness for and response to nuclear and radiological safety and security related incidents and emergencies.
- Provide support and relevant expertise for the IAEAs Incident and Emergency System (IES) and participate in response activities, training and exercises within IES.
