Who we are The International Environment, Reef and Ocean Division leads and influences Australia's engagement on a range of environment-related international agreements and treaties – including those relating to oceans, wildlife trade and migratory species – and oversees a range of Pacific environment programs.
The division contributes to the protection and sustainable management of Australia's wildlife, ocean, marine and migratory species, and the Great Barrier Reef.
The division comprises the International Environment Branch, the Great Barrier Reef Branch and the Ocean and Wildlife Branch.
The Ocean and Wildlife Branch is responsible for the conservation, protection and sustainable management of the environment.
It represents Australia's international wildlife trade interests, facilitating the listing and conservation planning of marine threatened species and ecological communities under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
The Branch also assesses the environmental performance of commercial harvest operations of Australian marine (including commercial fisheries) and terrestrial wildlife consistent with the requirements of the EPBC Act.
The Branch is leading delivery of Australia's Sustainable Ocean Plan and providing a focal point for domestic ocean matters in the department.
The Branch manages Australia's implementation of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species - Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the List of specimens taken to be suitable for live import.
The Maugean Skate Taskforce will lead delivery of the Commonwealth's commitment to funding priority conservation and recovery actions for the Maugean skate, to reduce the risk of the species going extinct.
This team will deliver a multi-million-dollar program of works, with a focus on key initiatives such as habitat remediation within Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania's west coast; improved and expanded captive breeding facilities for Maugean skate; and enabling community engagement and consultation.

The Job The successful applicant will lead an experienced, high-performing team in the procurement and delivery of conservation and recovery projects for the Maugean skate.
As the Assistant Director, you will be required to work with a range of stakeholders to define scope and manage the delivery of a diverse range of projects.
You will have comprehensive project management and leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to engage with multi-disciplinary consultants and delivery partners to achieve successful project outcomes.

Key responsibilities will include: Lead and manage the overarching conservation program, including liaising across relevant Commonwealth and state government agencies.Implement, negotiate and manage tender, procurement and grants processes, including drafting specifications, issuing tenders, evaluating bids, evaluating and reporting on deliverables.Provide expertise in the areas of captive breeding, oceanography and/or aquaculture.Lead the logistics and organisation of workshops and working group meetings.Brief Ministers and Departments on design, implementation and outcomes of the program.Lead, promote and continue to build partnerships with other areas of the Australian and Tasmanian governments, industry, the scientific community, Non-Government Organisations, and other stakeholders, including negotiation of service provider contracts.Oversee the preparation of ministerial and executive briefings and correspondence on the project approvals and outcomes. What we are looking for Knowledge and experience Experience leading multi-disciplinary project teams in a dynamic environment.Experience leading the management and delivery of complex, sensitive or high-profile projects within timelines and budget.Experience undertaking procurements and negotiations, implementing contractual agreements to support productive relationships, including the ability to manage contractors, subcontractors, and stakeholders to achieve program, budget and quality objectives.Develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Skills and capabilities The ability to work independently and as part of a team with remote staff, with excellent interpersonal skills to develop productive working relationships with government and non-government stakeholders.Ability to communicate effectively and show sound judgement.Strong organisational skills, ability to deliver high quality results under tight deadlines and manage competing priorities.A strong ability to think strategically and to consider what we need for tomorrow.Well developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to synthesise complex information to inform decision making. Desirable qualifications Relevant postgraduate or graduate level qualifications from an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas institution.Demonstrated relevant experience in a relevant field (e.g.
project and/or contract management, environmental, oceanography, aquaculture or marine science, recovery of threatened species, marine threatened species husbandry/captive breeding). Eligibility Citizenship - To be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.

Security Clearance - This position requires a Baseline Vetting security clearance.
You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.

Pre-employment Check - Your suitability for employment will be assessed through a pre-employment screening process.
This process includes a requirement to undergo and satisfy a National Police Check, referee checks, character clearance and where required a pre-employment medical assessment, specified mandatory qualification(s) validation and a probation period of 6 months.
