Ideally suited to a law student in their final year or two of study, this position is a fantastic stepping stone to legal practice in environment and planning law.The position will support our National Intake Service and legal teams to provide advice, information and referral services to members of the public right across Australia.National intake is a critical function within the EDO and provides exposure to a diverse range of environment and planning law issues.
The position will support the administration and provision of legal services to the community in response to inquiries, including data entry, taking and receiving phone calls from the public, responding to emails, and legal research tasks under the supervision of the National Intake Coordinator.
The position may also include drafting of fact sheets and legal information, coordination of volunteers to support the National Intake Service and coordination of service delivery across the EDOs legal practices.Candidate ProfileThe Paralegal is responsible for supporting the National Intake Coordinator and Solicitors in delivering the work of EDO's National Intake Service.The Paralegal will support the National Intake Service to provide information, referrals and advice and will be responsible for the administration of the service including data entry, conflict checking and research tasks.
The National Intake Service is managed by the National Intake Coordinator and is part of the Early Legal Intervention Program (ELI) which is overseen by the Managing Lawyer of ELI.
The Paralegal reports directly to the National Intake Coordinator.Key selection criteria It is expected that you will work closely with, and support, the National Intake Coordinator in the carrying out of day-to-day duties of the position.Essential RequirementsHave completed at least 3 years and be in the final two years of completion of an Australian law degree, or be a new graduate of a law degree Desirable requirementsExperience in environment and planning law, administrative law or related disciplinesHave completed or are undertaking studies in environment and planning law and administrative lawExperience in use of databases and file managementExperience in customer service, in a community legal centre environment or similar (including as a volunteer)Experience working with diverse people and communities from a wide variety of backgrounds, including First Nations people and clients who speak English as a second or more language.Core skills Ability to self-direct work; self-motivation and initiativeLegal research and drafting skillsDemonstrated organisational skillsDemonstrated customer service skills, experience working with clients in a legal practice setting will be an advantageA collaborative and communicative approach, in a nationally distributed and online workplace Personal qualities and cultural competencyA champion of the EDO valuesStrong initiative and self-motivationCommitment to the protection of the environment and related human rightsA strong sense of ethics and understanding of professional obligationsDemonstrated awareness of, and sensitivity to, the needs and concerns of First Nations peoples and peoples from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations in both the delivery of our work and our internal cultureThrive in a collaborative team-based environment Our Culture and Benefits:? ?
