Role The Language Assistants Program (LAP) places language assistants in Victorian government schools from Terms 2 to 4 each year to enrich their languages programs.
Each language assistant is supervised by a qualified language teacher and works across a school cluster comprising a base school and one or two other geographically proximate schools.
They are sourced from either overseas or within Australia and are fluent in the target language.
Language assistants support language teachers by sharing contemporary knowledge of their language and culture and by helping language students to develop fluency and confidence in the target language.
They also promote cultural and linguistic appreciation across the broader school community.
Language assistants are employed as part-time (0.8 FTE) Education Support Staff (range 1.2.1) under the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2022 (VGSA).
The placement runs over three terms, commencing on 22 April 2025 and concluding 19 December 2025.
Language assistants work 7.6 hours daily for four days per week across their school cluster according to a schedule agreed by the schools.
Language assistants must:
hold a bachelor's degree (majoring in the relevant target language) and/or possess mother tongue proficiency in the relevant target language; have a level of English proficiency equivalent to an IELTS score of no less than 6; hold a valid Working with Children Check at the commencement of their role; be prepared to work a minimum of 7.6 hours daily for four days per week.
Locally-sourced assistants must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or a temporary resident on an appropriate visa that allows for working privileges for the duration of their employment.
Candidates on a Permanent Partner visa (subclass 801) or Temporary Partner visa (subclass 820) are eligible to work as a locally-sourced assistant.
Key roles and responsibilities
Language assistants are supported by key school and departmental staff, including school principals, language assistant coordinators, language teachers, school business managers and the department.
Language assistants
Provide information about current developments in the target language to inform the delivery of their schools' languages program.
Assist with the development of resources, including teacher professional learning.
Participate in planning and delivering languages classes and activities.
Participate in professional development activities provided by the Department such as the Model UN program.
Specific tasks as set by each school.
Responsibilities Language Support and Student Engagement
Support teachers in the delivery of German language lessons by facilitating small-group activities, conversation practice, and individualized support.
Model accurate pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary to help students build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing German.
Encourage and inspire students through creative, interactive, and immersive activities (e.g., role-plays, games, and real-life scenarios).
Provide students with authentic insights into German culture, traditions, and contemporary life to deepen intercultural understanding.
Assist in planning and coordinating cultural activities, such as German cultural days, language competitions, film screenings, and cooking workshops.
Share personal experiences and cultural knowledge to promote global awareness and engagement.
Curriculum and Resource Support
Collaborate with German teachers to prepare engaging teaching materials, such as worksheets, visual aids, and multimedia resources.
Support classroom activities and assist in implementing lessons aligned with the Australian Curriculum and school learning outcomes.
Provide guidance with language-learning technologies, such as apps (e.g., Quizlet, Kahoot, Duolingo) and online tools to enhance student engagement.
Targeted Learning Support
Work with students requiring additional support or extension activities to meet their individual learning needs.
Assist with formative and summative assessments by supporting students in speaking tests, presentations, or project-based learning.
Provide constructive feedback to students in consultation with teachers.
Collaboration and Professional Support
Participate in team meetings with language teachers to discuss lesson plans, strategies, and student progress.
Assist with administrative tasks, such as organizing language resources, managing digital platforms, and supporting classroom logistics.
Contribute to extracurricular activities, such as German language clubs, excursions, and cultural events, to foster a vibrant language-learning community.
Commitment to School Culture
Support the school's vision, values, and priorities by contributing to a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Promote German language learning as a pathway to intercultural understanding, further education, and career opportunities.
Encourage student participation in language programs, exchange opportunities, or competitions.
Who May Apply Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.
Native or near-native fluency in German.
Relevant experience in language education, language assistance, or cultural exchange.
A valid Working With Children Check (WWCC).
Current Police Check (if required).
Australian work rights (citizenship, permanent residency, or valid visa).

Location Profile Mullauna Secondary College is the base school, responsible for administering the language assistant's salary and placement.
Mullauna Secondary College is located in Springfield Road, Mitcham and has a current enrolment of 650 students, including 35 International Students.
German is taught as the LoTE across all year levels, as a core subject in Years 7 and 8, and an elective at Years 9 to 12.
The German faculty consists of four qualified German teachers.
Mullauna participates in the AGTV / BJR exchange program, and also works in close collaboration with Vermont SC to share a sister-school relationship and annual reciprocal exchange program with the IGS Kaufungen in Hesse.
Rangeview Primary School is located in Churinga Avenue, Mitcham and has a current enrolment of 690 students.
The student population is culturally diverse with many students speaking several languages in addition to English.
German language is taught as a LoTE across all levels in the school, with students from Foundation to Level 6 all participating in weekly classes in German.
The school celebrates German culture and the program is taught by two highly proficient Specialist teachers.
