Main duties of the jobThe Patient Safety team incorporates Clinical Effectiveness and Clinical Governance and works to achieve the aims of the national statutory and regulatory requirements in relation to patient safety and clinical governance and effectiveness as a whole.
The Head of Clinical Effectiveness & Patient Safety will work closely with the Head of Clinical Governance & Patient Safety and the Head of Risk Management with the management and delivery of clinical effectiveness and governance functions across the Trust.
As a Patient Safety Specialist (PSS), the post holder will lead and where required, support patient safety improvement activity and ensure that systems thinking, human factors, and just culture principles are embedded in all patient safety processes, including the provision of expert specialist advice to directorate clinical and non-clinical staff.
Support in the continuous improvement of patient safety and clinical effectiveness, building on the foundations of a safer culture and safer systems in accordance with the NHS Patient Safety Strategy and participate in the implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF).
Undertake Patient Safety Incident Investigations and other reviews as relevant and promote patient safety thinking beyond why things go wrong in healthcare (Safety I), to examining why things routinely go right and how that can be maximised (Safety II).

Person SpecificationQualificationsMasters level qualification or equivalent through post registration training and short specialist courses or experienceClinical Audit course certificationEvidence of ongoing professional developmentPostgraduate qualification in patient safety and/or Ergonomics and Human FactorsWorking towards a Chartership with the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF)Registered qualification with NMC or GMCKnowledgeSpecialist knowledge of systems-based thinking and thematic analysis within a complex organisational settingSpecialist knowledge of clinical effectiveness within a complex healthcare settingWorking knowledge of PSIRF and how clinical audit facilitates PSIRF principles.Significant knowledge of national patient safety policy and strategy including levers for change in the NHS system.Project management, project implementation, and change management skillsGood understanding of complex issues within healthcare organisations and knowledge of recent policy developmentsSkillsCompetent at using a computer with a range of Microsoft applications e.g.
