General Manager (GM) Government and International Relations As the national governing body, Basketball Australia (BA), in conjunction with our State & Territory member associations, is at the forefront of promoting, fostering, and developing the sport of basketball across the country.
BA is responsible for safeguarding the sport in Australia.
With a proud, rich history and a commitment to excellence, we are dedicated to growing the game.
This mission of Australian Basketball is to be "Everybody's Game" and BA will lead, connect and enhance the experience of the Australian basketball community.
BA proudly manages Australian national teams (Boomers & Opals, Rollers & Gliders, men's and women's 3x3 and junior national teams), athlete pathways, the Centre of Excellence facility, national championship events, major international events and leads community programs for the good of the whole sport.
We are excited to be launching the new Basketball Australia Strategic Plan (2025-2028), the Whole of Sport Basketball 2040 Vision and refreshed BA Values.
These critical foundations, along with our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) (2024-2026), and BA's Women & Girls Strategy will set our direction and represent how we will bring our mission to life.
General Manager (GM), Government & International Relations We are seeking an experienced and dynamic professional to join us as the General Manager, Government and International Relations to continue to support the fastest growing sport in the country.
This is a critical leadership role for the sport of basketball.
The GM will utilise their experience, passion and ability to influence at all levels of government to lead and drive the BA's government and international relations strategy for BA and the broader sport.
The role will work closely with our Basketball State & Territory members.
Advocating at the highest levels, the GM will work and infiltrate at all levels of federal and state governments to understand direction, advocate for basketball and create and secure funding opportunities for basketball nationally and internationally that supports the incredible growth of the sport.
This success of this role will be crucial in delivering the objectives of the BA Strategic Plan (2025-2028) and the Whole of Sport Basketball 2040 Vision.
This role is full time, and ideally based in Melbourne, reporting to the CEO.
The role will require domestic and may also require limited international travel and given the nature of the industry some weekend work may be required.
Key Responsibilities Develop and drive a government and international stakeholder relations strategy that meets the BA Strategic Plan and contributes to Whole of Sport 2040 Vision. Collaborate and work closely with State & Territory partners to understand needs, develop plans and capitalise on opportunities for cross strategic collaboration. Identify key government and international government relationships and curate those relationships to pave the way for funding opportunities for short- and long-term strategic BA projects and initiatives and the whole of sport. Create a BA stakeholder government network that understands the vision and can create funding opportunities in the short and long term. Advocate the vision of basketball in Australia to all levels of government including the Whole of Sport Basketball 2040. Be at the forefront of the political landscape, understand government priorities at all levels and provide advice in relation to preparing for opportunities. Lead and create opportunities for government funding for international basketball activities in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade. Provide strategic advice to the CEO and Board on government and international matters. Qualifications and Experience Leadership experience in a similar role, preferably in sports, or a related industry. Expertise in the federal and state government sport funding ecosystems, key stakeholders, processes, and the complex environment. Understanding of the opportunities for international relations and funding for basketball. Proven experience establishing government networks that convert to successful business outcomes that meet organisational strategy. Proven ability to influence and negotiate with key government and member stakeholders to achieve objectives. Passion for basketball and a vision of what is possible, knowing the challenges and opportunities that face our sport. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to think strategically and work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. You must be an Australian Citizen or a Permanent Resident to make application.
