Westmead Hospital Fixed Term (12 months) 1.0 FTE Postgraduate Fellow Department of Neurosurgery Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD).
This position will be primarily located at Westmead Hospital within the Department of Neurosurgery.
The Neurosurgery Department provides a tertiary and quaternary service for the patients across the LHD.
The unit is busy with the entire spectrum of sub-specialty neurosurgery offered across the department.
Although the fellow is involved in all components of the services, the position is designed to offer sub-specialty training in complex and endoscopic spinal neurosurgery.
Successful applicants will have completed neurosurgical training and be seeking sub-specialty fellowship training with a focus on complex spinal surgery.
Applicants expecting to be awarded fellowship within 6 months are eligible to apply.
The position will be for a period of 12 months commencing on 3 February 2025 to 1 February 2026.
Essential Requirements for Appointment: Possess or be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or equivalent as provided for in the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.
Must hold a current NSW Environment Protection Authority license (if applicable). Sound clinical knowledge in Neurosurgery demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) or satisfactory completion of training with examination pending. Successful applicants may be offered a conjoint university appointment within the Faculty of Medicine at the relevant University attached to each facility.
The level of academic appointment will be commensurate with the qualifications, experience, and scholarship and will be held only during the tenure of the Western Sydney Local Health District appointment.
No remuneration is attached to the University appointment.
The appointee will be responsible to the University for academic matters and to the District for clinical matters.
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Staff Specialists (State) Award.

In addressing the selection criteria, include any relevant skills, knowledge, qualifications, and experience:
FRACS (Neurosurgery) or satisfactory completion of neurosurgery training with examination pending. Evidence of satisfactory completion of neurosurgery training.
A demonstrated interest or experience in spinal surgery would be advantageous. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including: Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues. Excellent organisational, supervision, and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships. Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills, and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice. Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality. Demonstrated ability to manage time and resources efficiently and contributing to the effectiveness and efficiency of the health care system. Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by: Systems thinking and risk-taking aptitude. Commitment to self-care and personal development. Capacity to maintain personal integrity, tolerate stress and demonstrate resilience. Commitment to building relationships, leading, and developing others. Results and outcome focused. Commitment to good governance, achieving results and managing risks. Demonstrated commitment to Education, Training, and Research, as applicable to the position.
