The Principal Platform Engineer role is a 2-year fixed term contract. Primary work location is at the RBA BRS office and must have flexibility to attend meetings at the Sydney Head Office.
About the team At the RBA, Platform Engineering is key to automating the way in which we deploy, manage, govern, and destroy our systems as they move through their lifecycle. The Platform Engineering team maintains IT solutions spanning CI/CD, DevOps, Infrastructure as Code, technology maintenance and automation services leveraged by BAU and projects. The team is focused on maturing technical capabilities, standards, and controls whilst also evaluating and onboarding new technologies to ensure technology solutions remain relevant, robust, and secure.
Principal Platform Engineer Responsibilities: Provide technical leadership to the Core Modernisation project and Platform Engineering team with a focus on Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD pipelines delivering Cloud and on premise IT Infrastructure solutions. Define frameworks, guardrails, and IT controls to ensure solutions are consistent, optimised, and adhere to IT security policies and standards. Mentor other staff to increase the knowledge across the Platform Engineering team. Collaborate with others to promote and integrate the use of Infrastructure Engineering using code. Work with principal technologists, IT architects, managers and leads to uplift standard coding practices and quality controls used across IT Infrastructure. Be responsible for the maturity and implementation of Infrastructure as Code practices. Identify and implement standard practices for such things as unit testing, documentation, and release management in the IT infrastructure space. Deliver solution documentation, operational assessments, and review technical documentation created by internal and external teams. Present at meetings to peers and senior stakeholders to inform and educate on Platform Engineering subjects ensuring the content is appropriate for the audience. About you: You have at least 10 years experience in IT infrastructure. You have at least 4 years hands-on experience as a subject matter expert in Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD, using infrastructure automation tools Terraform and Puppet. Your last 3 years experience is in a lead or principal capacity within Infrastructure Engineering. You are a confident and excellent written and verbal communicator with leadership qualities. You'll have a mindset that challenges through intelligent enquiry, yet accepts some things can't change as we are a regulated entity. You are enthusiastic about change, and want to help make things better. You look to complete tasks the right way, not necessarily the fastest or easiest way. You are innovative, creative, and enthusiastic about your subject matter. Skills & Expertise required: Must have experience in a technical leadership or principal role, preferably in Banking and Government. Must have extensive experience designing, building, and managing Infrastructure as Code solutions using Puppet, Terraform, and building integrations with Azure DevOps Services. Experience mentoring people to build skills within a team. Excellent communication skills with peers and senior stakeholders. Experience in developing and maintaining relationships with internal customers and stakeholders. Experience with Agile methodologies. Knowledge of Automation/orchestration and configuration management products.
