Clinical Psychologist - Grade 2 - Healthy Weight Service; Perth Children's Hospital Location: Nedlands
Unit/Division: Perth Children's Hospital > Service Unit 5 Allied Health
About the Role: We are seeking a Clinical Psychologist to join our multidisciplinary team at Perth Children's Hospital and contribute to the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care.
This is a unique opportunity to work within an established, innovative service that transforms health trajectories for children with severe, complicated obesity and related conditions.
As a Clinical Psychologist, you will work closely with children and their families to assess cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors contributing to obesity.
You will empower families to overcome barriers to positive lifestyle changes, foster resilience, and support the creation of a supportive home environment that enables sustainable, lifelong health improvements.
This includes addressing the impact of the child's condition on self-esteem, social relationships, and overall mental health, as they navigate their understanding and acceptance of their bodies.
Flexibility in adapting your approach - from being a supportive listener to actively assisting the broader multidisciplinary team will be an essential part of providing holistic care.
Key Responsibilities: Conduct individual, family, and group therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based interventions. Educate children and families about the psychological aspects of behavior change, including motivation, goal setting, and habit formation. Participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics (including dietitians, physiotherapists, and medical professionals) to create integrated care plans, including potential medical interventions, and provide psychosocial triage for adolescents and families. Address psychological issues related to obesity, ensuring they do not hinder engagement in treatment and lifestyle interventions. Liaise with external agencies, including school and community-based groups and refer clients to specialized support as needed. Provide education and consultation to colleagues and families on psychological aspects of health behavior change. If you are passionate about working with family systems with prior experience in managing complex cases that require balancing medical and psychological factors, then we encourage you to apply.
Please note a Master or Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology and eligibility for full registration and endorsement in Clinical Psychology with the Psychology Board of Australia is a requirement for this role. About our Team: The Healthy Weight Service (HWS) is a specialist multidisciplinary team providing statewide, tertiary-level care for children and young people aged 0–18 years with severe, complicated obesity and related health or psychosocial challenges.
These challenges may include chronic diseases, cardiac and respiratory issues, neurodiversity, mental health concerns, trauma, and social difficulties.
Our experienced team delivers evidence-based, holistic care through personalized assessments, education, and treatments to support the unique needs of each child and their family.
Focusing on addressing the physical, emotional, and social aspects of obesity, our goal is to empower children and their families to foster sustainable lifestyle changes, prevent complications such as diabetes, and reduce intergenerational health risks, to achieve lasting health and an improved quality of life.
