PhD Thesis “Development and Characterization of silicon-tin-sulfide composite anodes for generation 3b lithium-ion batteries”
PhD Thesis “Development and Characterization of silicon-tin-sulfide composite anodes for generation 3b lithium-ion batteries”
- Center for Low-Emission Transport-- Lithium-ion batteries are the centerpiece of modern electric drive concepts. In order to improve the specific energy, volumetric energy density, fast-charging ability and safety of LIBs, fundamental materials research must be conducted on high-performance anode and cathode materials.
- This PhD position is announced as part of a funded project focusing on the **development of novel anode active materials for generation 3b lithium-ion batteries based on silicon/tin sulfide/graphite composites**. Throughout this PhD project, conducted under the supervision of **AIT** and the **Institute of Inorganic Chemistry-functional materials** at **the University of Vienna**, you will deal intensively with topics related to:
- electrode design and development using environmentally safe water-based processing methods
- fabrication and electrochemical characterization of battery cells using ex-situ and in-situ techniques
- You will carry out a literature search on the (de)lithiation mechanisms of Si
- and Sn
- based anode materials and their electrochemical performance
- Under the guidance of our team and the University of Vienna, you will synthesize anode materials based on silicon, tin, and sulfur, and investigate their lithiation mechanisms via in-situ and ex-situ techniques such as XRD, SEM, Raman, BET, XPS, etc.
- You will also investigate the thermodynamics and electrochemical performance properties of the anode active materials via galvanostatic cycling, galvanostatic titration, cell reaction entropy measurements, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and in-situ dilatometry.
- Our **AIT-PhD Programme** offers you the opportunity to write your PhD thesis in collaboration with our specialized researchers from the **Center for Low-Emission Transport**, our industrial project partners within Austria and with universities in Austria, Belgium, and Slovenia.
- You will work in a **multidisciplinary, international team** consisting of scientists, students, engineers, and technicians.
- You will gain experiences in electrochemical characterization techniques
- You will have the opportunity to discuss your results at project meetings
- You will participate in national/international workshops and conferences to present your work
- You will write reports and publish your results in peer-reviewed journals
Your qualifications as an **Ingenious Partner**:
- You have graduated (or close to completion) with a MSc in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a similar field.
- Good knowledge in Inorganic Chemistry, Materials Science, and/or Thermodynamics
- Previous experience with experimental work in a chemical lab is desired
- Experience in the use of electrochemical characterization techniques for energy storage (use of Arbin, Maccor, Biologic or comparable systems) is considered an asset
- Interested in the conception of scientific studies
- High level of commitment and team spirit
- Very good English (written and spoken at technical level)
**What to expect**:
EUR 32.204;
- gross per year for 30 hours/week based on the collective agreement. There will be additional company benefits. You will be part of our international AIT PhD community and participate in our AIT PhD framework program. As a research institution, we are familiar with the supervision and execution of PhD theses and we are looking forward to supporting you accordingly
and **certificates**, online.
