The Institute for Medieval Research (IMAFO), Department of Byzantine Research, of the Austrian Academy

of Sciences (OeAW) Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

**POSTDOC POSITION (F/M/X)**
(full-time, 40h per week)

for a duration of 10 months (November 01st, 2024 - August 31st, 2025).

The Department of Byzantine Research is dedicated to the study of the medieval Greek culture of the Eastern

Mediterranean as well as its ‘Nachleben’, in three strands: ‘Communities and Landscapes’, ‘Language, Script

and Text’ and ‘Byzantium and Beyond: Cultural Heritage and Intercultural Context’. Employing the

methodology of historical-cultural studies, the work on written sources is combined with research on

manuscripts and material culture (inscriptions, seals). As a result, there are strong interconnections between

the three strands that are in constant dialogue. Digital humanities play an increasing role in the analysis and

visualization of research data. Several long-term research projects are complemented by shorter projects,

often supported by external funding.

**Your tasks**:

- Research on Byzantine prayer books with special focus on aspects of education and literary culture,

within the Vienna Euchologia Project

**Your profile**:

- Ph.D. in Classical Philology or Byzantine Studies
- Several years of experience in research on the manuscript culture of Byzantium and the edition of
- ancient/medieval texts
- Knowledge in ancient and medieval Greek, Byzantine palaeography
- Excellent German and English skills
- Interest in working within a research team, and developing digital skills
- Soft skills (flexibility, communication skills, ability to communicate research results in publications
- and in oral presentations)

We offer a monthly gross salary to € 4.750,10, according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy

of Sciences.
