Official Visitor (Casual) Role: Official Visitor (Casual) to Youth Justice centre – Wagga Wagga (Riverina Youth Justice Centre). Employment type: Casual Board Member. This is a targeted recruitment. Preference will be given to candidates who meet the established standards of the role and are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, as the Department acknowledges this lived experience contributes a valuable perspective to work with this community. Your role The Inspector of Custodial Services (ICS) is appointed to inspect adult correctional facilities and youth justice centres, and report to Parliament on the findings. The Official Visitor Program is overseen by the ICs. Official Visitors resolve enquiries and complaints made by young people in custody and assist in monitoring the conditions and treatment of young people in custodial centres throughout NSW. Official Visitors are community‑based appointments made by the Minister for Youth Justice. An Official Visitor is assigned to a youth justice centre for up to four years and visits the centre once a fortnight. What you’ll do Visit assigned centres regularly to speak with children, young people, staff and management. Record and report on complaints, enquiries, and the general centre environment. Facilitate the resolution of issues at the local level where possible. Submit reports to the Minister, Inspector of Custodial Services, and relevant authorities. Maintain independence, objectivity and confidentiality at all times. What we’re looking for We are seeking to appoint Official Visitors to the following centres and welcome applications from Aboriginal people who live in those regions: Riverina Youth Justice Centre (Wagga Wagga) Cultural awareness, particularly in working with Aboriginal people and those from diverse backgrounds. The ability to remain impartial and act with integrity. Basic computer literacy and access to email/internet. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Additional information Applications are invited for appointments to centres in the above mentioned regions across New South Wales. Suitable candidates may be added to a talent pool to fill any appointments that may become vacant over the next 18 months.
