The IP and Transport Network Technical Specialist is a key role responsible for crafting, developing, and delivering carrier-grade IP and optical transport solutions that form the backbone of Optus’s critical infrastructure. Reporting to the Associate Director of Enterprise Services, this position ensures the network remains scalable, resilient, and technologically advanced while managing complex environments that directly impact service quality for millions of customers. The role involves crafting and costing customised solutions based on customer requirements, coordinating delivery through defined milestones, and providing oversight to ensure implementation aligns with original builds. Applying expertise across multi-vendor platforms and advanced technologies, the Specialist drives innovation, operational efficiency, and transformation initiatives to build a robust digital backbone for future connectivity. What You’ll Do Lead end-to-end development and planning for IP and optical transport solutions, including DWDM, OTN, IP/MPLS, and Carrier Ethernet, producing HLD and LLD aligned with business needs. Provide technical leadership and hands-on configuration across Cisco, Juniper, and Nokia platforms for routing, switching, and optical transport systems. Coordinate fibre network lifecycle planning, capacity management, and GIS-based mapping for optimal utilisation and fault localisation. Optimise network performance, troubleshoot complex issues, and implement automation solutions using NMS platforms and tools like Cisco NSO and Red Hat Ansible. Evaluate emerging technologies, maintain architectural documentation, and ensure compliance with internal policies and industry regulations. Act as a domain expert, guide multi-functional teams, mentor junior engineers, and foster a culture of technical excellence. What You Bring Relevant professional qualifications in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, together with significant hands‑on experience in IP and optical transport network engineering within large‑scale telecom environments. Hands‑on experience with DWDM, OTN, ROADM (Nokia optical systems), IP routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, ISIS), MPLS, VPNs, QoS, and Carrier Ethernet technologies (E‑LINE, E‑LAN, E‑TREE). Proficiency with Network Management Systems (NMS), GIS tools for network planning, and multi‑vendor platforms (Cisco, Juniper, Nokia). Preferred certifications include Cisco CCNP/CCIE Service Provider, Juniper JNCIP/JNCIE-SP, Nokia Optical Network and Service Routing certifications, and MEF Carrier Ethernet credentials. Experience with network automation tools and scripting (Python, Ansible, NETCONF/YANG), plus familiarity with SDN/NFV, cloud networking, and virtualisation technologies.
