Antitrust and Competition - Mergers and Acquisitions (Corporate) Attorney / Corporate - M&A Attorney / Corporate - Compliance Attorney / Municipal Law Transactions - Land Use, Employment, etc. Attorney in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory The Managing Principal Lawyer roles are crucial within the organization’s Specialist Advice and Services Division. These positions are available across four legal units: Competition and Consumer Law Unit, Corporate Law Unit, Mergers and Exemptions Law Unit, and Regulatory Law Unit. The roles demand superior leadership and legal expertise, along with management, advisory, and litigation skills. The specific responsibilities include: Responsibilities Managing legal teams to ensure sustainable workloads and strategic use of resources. Supervising and mentoring Lawyers, Senior Lawyers, and Principal Lawyers to enhance team performance. Providing strategic legal advice on significant matters, especially those with sector-wide implications or reputational risks for the organization. Overseeing legal outputs to ensure consistency and appropriate risk balance, while identifying sensitivities and broader context. Building and maintaining positive engagement with internal and external stakeholders. Contributing to the legal knowledge and knowledge management processes within the Legal Group and the organization. Driving cross-branch collaboration to improve working methods and resource management across the Legal Group. Education and Experience Candidates are expected to meet the APS Integrated Leadership Profile for the advertised classification. The role requires significant legal experience at a senior practitioner level, typically around 10+ years or equivalent, relevant to the organization’s functions and responsibilities. This includes areas such as litigation, investigations, enforcement, consumer law, competition law, mergers and exemptions, infrastructure regulation, administrative law, or corporate law. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence, persuade, and negotiate effectively. Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to collaborate with line area or corporate teams to achieve outcomes for the organization. The ability to quickly distill and explain key legal issues in complex scenarios, exercising excellent judgment under pressure. Demonstrated success in leading a team. Admission as a practitioner, however described, of the High Court or the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory is essential, with a requirement to hold a current Australian practising certificate. Salary Information The salary for the Managing Principal Lawyer, EL2 position ranges from $162,619 to $172,365, with an additional % superannuation. The successful candidate may also attract an additional allowance through an Individual Flexibility Arrangement (IFA), depending on their skills and experience. It is important to note that all IFAs are reviewed annually in accordance with the organization’s IFA policy and are not ongoing.
