Animal Management Officer

This role sits at the heart of a council’s commitment to safe, harmonious neighbourhoods — the kind where dogs are walked, cats are registered, and complaints don’t turn into soap operas. As an Animal Management Officer, you’ll be the boots‑on‑the‑ground presence ensuring local laws are upheld and that both people and pets are treated with fairness, consistency, and a touch of good old‑fashioned common sense. Key Responsibilities Conduct proactive patrols to ensure compliance with the Domestic Animals Act, council local laws, and relevant regulations. Respond to customer requests, animal‑related incidents, and community concerns with professionalism and calm under pressure. Manage lost, stray, and seized animals — from impounding to arranging reunification or rehoming. Investigate reports of nuisance, aggressive behaviour, attacks, and breaches of legislation. Issue notices, infringements, and prepare documentation for legal proceedings where required. Educate the community on responsible pet ownership and promote council programs and initiatives. Maintain accurate records, case notes, and evidence in line with legislative and council standards. Work collaboratively with shelters, rangers, local services, and internal teams to support community safety outcomes. About You You’re steady‑handed when things get chaotic and warm‑hearted when people need guidance. You understand the balance between enforcing the rules and keeping the community on side. You’re the kind of person who can coax a nervous dog into a crate, diffuse a heated street dispute, and still file a tidy report at the end of it. What You’ll Bring Experience in animal management, compliance, law enforcement, community safety, or a similar field. Sound knowledge of the Domestic Animals Act, Local Government Act, and relevant regulations (or the eagerness to learn fast). Strong communication skills — clear, confident, and not rattled by conflict. Ability to problem‑solve and exercise sound judgement in unpredictable situations. Competence in preparing reports, statements, and evidence. A current Victorian Driver Licence. (Typically required) Certificate IV in Animal Control and Regulation or willingness to obtain.
