They walk alongside consumers, their families, and friends in their recovery journey. No two days are the same; some days may be structured with planned activity, others involve responding to an emergency. What skills do I need to work in mental health? Core nursing skills: planning and providing appropriate and timely care, observation, collaboration. Confidentiality, dignity and respect. Promoting consumers' independence and engagement. Be compassionate and empathic towards people in distress. Non‑judgemental attitude and interest in all walks of life. Active listening. Remain calm, use de‑escalation skills. Will I lose my general nursing skills? We welcome those with sound general nursing skills. Mental health consumers face physical health disparities that we aim to address through physical health monitoring and intervention. What can the Statewide Mental Health Service offer? Career path across closely allied services. Flexible working arrangements – part‑time or occasional shifts. Access to core mental health nursing skills training including the Connecting with People suicide mitigation approach. Support in finding suitable service areas, tracking progress, developmental opportunities. Essential Requirements Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as an Enrolled Nurse (holds a Board‑approved qualification in administration of medicines). Pre‑employment checks: conviction check for crimes of violence, sex‑related offences, serious drug offences, crimes involving dishonesty; identification check; disciplinary action check.
