Your new role The Centre for Aboriginal Studies (CAS) aspires to make a difference through fostering higher education in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities we serve, to create positive social change for all Australians. As Deputy Director of CAS, you will be at the heart of our mission to integrate the rich perspectives and voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples into the fabric of our university. Your leadership will be pivotal in nurturing a culturally safe space for learning and collaboration, where the aspirations and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff are championed. Key Responsibilities Collaboratively work under the guidance of the Director to enhance the participation and success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples within the university. Provide leadership and operational management to our dedicated Aboriginal Academic team, driving excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. Foster meaningful relationships with industry partners, associations, and the broader community to further the reach and impact of the CAS. About You We are seeking an individual with a deep commitment to Indigenous education and community empowerment. You are a leader who understands the transformative role of education and is grounded in strong community connections, bringing experience, insight and integrity to your work. You are motivated by opportunities to elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and knowledge, thrive in collaborative spaces, and lead with respect, empathy, and purpose. Your approach to problem‑solving is innovative and informed by lived experience, community engagement, and a genuine desire to support others to achieve their goals. Selection Criteria Leadership – Strong, respected connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities, and culture; demonstrated leadership in embedding cultural diversity, indigenised curriculum principles, and equity in teaching and learning. Ability to develop a shared vision, inspire others, and lead meaningful change. Strategic Focus – Understanding of the internal and external operating environments relevant to CAS and the University. Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging – Ability to articulate key equity and inclusion challenges within CAS and a demonstrated commitment to addressing them. Communication & Interpersonal Skills – Excellent written and verbal communication, negotiation, conflict‑resolution, and networking skills. People Leadership – Ability to attract, develop, and empower staff and students, supporting individual and team excellence and fostering a respectful, positive culture. Credibility & Stakeholder Engagement – Strong reputation and credibility within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, academia, and external stakeholders. Commitment to Excellence & Innovation – Proven capacity to drive continuous improvement in student experience, teaching quality, and research. Desirable – Academic experience. Experience managing organisational units in a university setting.
