Many of our teachers have taught in regional areas, and reflect on their time as one of the most enjoyable and beneficial parts of their career – both professionally and personally. They tell us about the sense of community, the enhanced opportunities for career growth, and – most of all – they tell us about the children and young people they have worked with. Cultural awareness and understanding is particularly important for teachers in regional areas. The Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework guides staff to incorporate culturally responsive practices and approaches when working with Aboriginal students, their families, and communities. Students in rural communities are open, friendly and active. These characteristics are reflected in the dynamic and vibrant classroom environments found in regional and rural schools. Strong parent‑teacher relationships and supportive school environments are a feature of these schools and complement proactive approaches to managing student behaviour. Teachers find joining local sporting clubs and participating in community events enhances their relationship with both students and parents.
