Your Role The position is for a Senior Casualty Underwriter within the Casualty team. The role involves underwriting new and renewal casualty accounts in line with Chubb guidelines, and developing business from an allocated panel of Independent and Global brokers within delegated authority. It requires building and maintaining relationships with a panel of brokers, pursuing target accounts, and executing business plans to maximise opportunities. The role also requires coaching and developing less experienced staff, making independent decisions, and collaborating with colleagues and managers. Your Responsibilities Commercial Underwriting Process / Analysis Work within the Casualty department on an assigned broker panel. Underwrite Primary, Umbrella and Excess Liability portfolios in accordance with Chubb underwriting strategy. Select new risks and underwrite renewals for assigned books of business and/or designated specialty classes or market segments. Organise and present significant, complex accounts to Branch, Regional or Global referral points for approval as applicable. Split time equally between development work and managing the existing portfolio. Handle accounts including Australian indigenous business and multinational programs such as fronting placements; typical premium sizes range from \$25,000 to \$1,000,000. Play a key role on multi‑departmental accounts. Provide technical leadership for underwriting/marketing in the department or branch, including risk referrals and portfolio management; serve as a resource regarding unique coverage needs. Provide expertise in a specialty given customer group or line of business. Maintain a high level understanding of pricing individual risk exposures. Assist others in developing pricing strategies, renewal negotiation strategies and game plans for new business submissions. Serve as a higher level of underwriting authority for others in the branch. Relationship Management Identify, analyse and develop sources of desirable new business opportunities, including cross‑departmental and pipeline opportunities. Prepare, deliver and negotiate quotations. Collaborate with other product lines, including whole of account underwriting and broker meetings. Build and maintain long‑term relationships with key producers and insureds; deal with producer principals on complex underwriting issues. Present to prospective producers and may initiate new producer appointments. Identify and share information regarding competitors’ products and underwriting. Provide expertise on accessing opportunities for growth in specialty, customer or product line groups. Qualifications 5 years’ experience in a Casualty or Package Underwriting and Development role with an insurance company. Strong broker relationships across independent and global broking houses. Develop creative solutions to unique underwriting situations. Understand advanced pricing techniques (claims rating, payback pricing, deductible structures, etc.) and how to use and sell them. Understand account servicing costs. Be familiar with developing marketing plans and handling complex accounts. Understand the underwriting appetites of other departments and how they relate to interdepartmental accounts. Understand the broker selection and appointment process. Make recommendations for tailoring coverage and manuscripting policies. Be familiar with the products/services of key competitors. Operate and perform well in a team, coordinating with Claims, Risk Engineering and Operations. Have experience interpreting and analysing claims and deploying loss control resources appropriately. Display excellent collaboration, communication and negotiation skills internally and externally. Demonstrate ability to effectively train entry‑level underwriters and orient new experienced hires. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
