Under limited direction, the APS 4 Asset Accounting and Reporting Officer performs moderately complex asset management and reporting tasks within an integrated team. The role requires a sound understanding of Commonwealth financial compliance, legislative frameworks, and Defence policy to support decision‑making. The officer is accountable for managing their workflow, making decisions within defined parameters, and seeking guidance when needed. They may exercise discretion in interpreting legislation and procedures, identify routine non‑compliance, and provide informed administrative support. Some research and analysis may be required. Responsibilities include sharing information, monitoring work practices, setting priorities, and developing local procedures. The officer may supervise a team, offering coaching and on‑the‑job training to less experienced staff. Communication with stakeholders is essential, involving advice on moderately complex operational and administrative matters to support Defence outcomes. The role also involves contributing to self‑improvement and professional development. Assist with asset accounting, balance sheet management, and financial reporting. Support monthly and annual asset management reporting. Advise business units on technical asset and financial accounting matters. Apply asset management policies and procedures. Build effective relationships and contribute to team activities. Collaborate and operate as a productive team member. Recommend solutions to issues affecting outcomes. Seek guidance on complex matters. About our Team There is no single employer in the Commonwealth that offers the breadth of technical challenges that DFG tackle. Working in the Financial Accounting and Assets team means you will be applying your professional judgement and knowledge to a huge range of complex accounting issues. The Financial Accounting and Assets team are responsible for the full financial reporting function and financial management of Defence assets through their capability lifecycle. They are also accountable for policy advice, compliance assurance and conducting quality assurance checks on financial accounting activities. The team's judgement is relied upon to deliver professional advice and reporting around complex assets, business processes, procurements, and multi‑year billion dollar projects. The team is responsible for the financial accounting behind the largest asset base in the Commonwealth valued into the hundreds of billions of dollars. Think big, physical tangible “stuff” like aircraft, ships, submarines, plus a huge property portfolio, specialist military equipment, and complex Intellectual Property and bespoke technology. You get to analyse complex trends, work on the forefront of changes to accounting standards (e.g. lease and asset standards changes) and as well as help prepare policies that impact the whole organisation. You will gain a full understanding of the asset lifecycle from procurement to disposal. There will also be the opportunity to get involved in the largest ERP (SAP) implementation project in the Southern Hemisphere.
